I found this page from google, it's got loads of different patterns, if you want to be fancy. http://www.knittingpatterncentral.com/directory/dishcloths.php

I suppose it would work with string, but you can buy dishcloth cotton yarn.

Ok ... silly question number 2 - where do I buy this from please? adn is it expensive?

i made my first dishcloth a couple of weeks ago, from unbleached dishcloth yarn..it used about half a ball to make up a 6 inch square..

I got the pattern from a website called dishclothboutique.com..(but this website seems to be down at the moment, so won't post a link).

I love my home-grown cloth, as it seems to do the job so much better and looks so 'earthmother'!!

There was a thread on this a couple of weeks ago and it included a link for a dishcloth pattern.
I have 2 knitted dishcloths, I got them off E-bay sold by a cat protection charity.
They are great, they bleach really well and somehow I feel quite smug when using them.
I was looking at some dishcloth yarn whilst at the market, but my mum sniggered, so I decided to buy it when she's not there.

#4 and #5 have some info, dishcloth cotton is just a creamy coloured 100% cotton yarn, usually very cheap.
If you have any plain cotton yarn left over from something else then why not use that first? You could always wash the cloth before using if you are worried about the colour running, but it would be the OS way to use up anything you hve before buying in!
You can also use thick white parcel string - hairy string sheds a bit!

Some of those dishcloths would look nice knitted in pastel coloured baby wool and made into a blanket - I've bookmarked the page for future reference! :)

I love the penguin and the other animals Pen-Pen,
That's the dishcloth I liked Jolaaled, although I don't think I'll bother with the stripe, as I like to be able to bleach my cloths.

Thanks Seakay, for some reason. the thought of using the huge bag of cotton yarn that I bought about 6 years ago never entered my tiny mind.
Think I have just solved my christmas present dilemma for friend and family.
