Have to have a credit card to use Ebay

I've had an Ebay account for as long as I can remember. I've just been asked to verify my identity using a credit card. I contacted Ebay and said I don't have one and the answer was to add myself to a relatives card and use that.

Well they can shove that, I guess that's my Ebaying days over. Can't believe it. I mean Ebay of all places!

Welcome to eBay Live Help, my name is Rita. Please give me a moment while I check your account details.

I’ve now verified your account. How may I help you today ******?

Hi there, I've been requested to confirm my identity with a credit card but I don't have one to use

    Rita Goring (5/10/2011 07:09:41 AM)
Aside from confirming your identity through credit card, will there be anything else you'd like to add so I can check on it as well?

    ********-****** (5/10/2011 07:10:09 AM)
    No I don't think so

    Rita Goring (5/10/2011 07:10:50 AM)
May I know what you're doing before being asked to verify your identity then?

    ********-****** (5/10/2011 07:11:48 AM)
I was attempting to make a purchase, I committed to buy an item and was asked to sign in again, followed by a request for credit card details in order to confirm my identity

    Rita Goring (5/10/2011 07:13:20 AM)
Thank you for that information. For your reference, verifying a member with their credit card details is one way that eBay is helping sellers to minimise Unpaid Items whilst supporting legitimate purchases. So for you to be able to continue with your purchase, I suggest that you place a valid credit card on your account firt. But as you don't have a credit card of your own and as you can only verify your identity on eBay with such, you may wish to talk to your friend, partner or parents about adding you to their card as an authorised user. Many credit card companies allow a number of additional authorised users.

you're kidding? using Ebay now requires credit card ownership?

    ********-****** (5/10/2011 07:14:42 AM)
    I have a visa debit card - why can't I use that?

    Rita Goring (5/10/2011 07:16:54 AM)
We currently don't allow debit cards on verifying an account because as you know, using the credit card processing network, we'll verify that the name and billing address you entered match the name and billing address on the credit card.

    ********-****** (5/10/2011 07:18:01 AM)
I don't know what to say - I guess this is the end of Ebay for me

    Rita Goring (5/10/2011 07:18:50 AM)
I completely understand where you're coming from so let me help by forwarding your feedback about this policy to our site developers for review.

Thanks, It's disappointing considering Ebay was originally about people exchanging goods based on trust and outside of the commercial trappings of the high street and now I need a credit card to use the site. I've had an account for years, have successfully bought and sold using paypal 90% 0f the time.

    ********-****** (5/10/2011 07:23:00 AM)
Thanks anyway, I guess I'll close my account and head for Amazon

    Rita Goring (5/10/2011 07:23:17 AM)
Would there be anything else you’d like to discuss with before we end this session?

    ********-****** (5/10/2011 07:23:41 AM)
I guess not, Thanks Rita, bye

Don't worry, it is just that some sellers have their buyers restricted to those that have a credit card registered. You will find you should be able to buy from most other members.

Sellers tend to put that restriction on if they attract a lot of sammers or have a buyer stalking them using different IDs

Really - I see, seems strange the help desk woman didn't mention that.

I believe you are also asked to provide this information if you are trying to buy anything with a knife/blade to prove you are over 18 - could it be for that reason?

They're never getting my card details either.
I've not seen it yet, but depending on when it asks, there will be a few disappointed sellers if it lets me bid first and confirms later.

Ebay help people normally don't know themselves. I have my seller prefernces set for those with FB under 5 to have a CC registered. Just because some of the items I sell are targetted by scammers. I have had the odd person ask me to lift that for some sales normally I will as scammers normally wouldn't ask. So if you really want the item it may be worth contacting the seller.

My preferences are set almost the same on my business account, I did lower it to two feedback a while ago as someone wanted to bid and I forgot to change it back again.. I have to use this block especially when selling sci fi items as they attract a lot of underage users who I used to have issues with not paying once their parents caught them!

It is however posisble for a seller to block 'all' buyers if they don't have a card registered, but I don't think that is a common block as I buy a lot and my buying account does not have a card registered and I have never been blocked.

For sellers who are having issues with bidders it is a useful tool but you may need to experiment with the settings to only block those potentially difficult buyers or underage kids, whilst leaving the bidding open for more established buyers. This is what the options look like:

Buyers with no credit card on file
Block buyers who do not have a credit card on file.
Only apply this block to buyers who have a Feedback score of 543210 or lower.

I should also point out that it is not just the seller preferences which can require a buyer to have a credit card registered, but if you wish to purchase items with restriction - such as cutlery - as the sale of knives (even table knives) requires age verification - then you must have a credit card registered. This verifies you are over 18. You cannot have a credit card if you are under 18, hence this is the only way Ebay can verify age on certain items.

I agree with whats been said - it may be the seller blocking you for not having a card - or the kind of item your buying.

Try another seller and see if it still asks you to verify. If it does, ask yourself if its an item that may need age verification - and try buying something else.

I only accept bids from people with a paypal account registered - but would never insist that the buyer has a credit card on file.

If your still blocked - then you've just fallen foul of ebays determination to upset as many Ebayers as it can in one year. I think they are trying for the record.
