instant porridge-make it yourself?

went camping a few days ago and I am so lazy I have to eat things using boiling water or one ring. For breakfast I took a couple of instant 'just add boiling water' porridge oats but at 80p per pot thought they were a bit expensive. when i opened the pots the porridge just looked like normal oats!! what I was thinking was has anyone tried just adding boiling water? I would try it myself but I have no oats and am on a no spend for another 10 days!

If you are thinking about those "ready brekky" or "Quaker" sachets - you can replicate these by blitzing normal oats in a blender and then making up using the resulting powder.

Although now my lads are bigger - I make oats in the microwave so it saves on the yukky pan.

Porridge is one of our favourite breakfasts when we camp. I put the normal amount of oats I would use at home, about 4 heaped desert spoons of powdered milk and one of sugar in a plastic bag. When making it up I just pour it into my pan, add water and cook as normal. Lovely, hot, filling brekkie that is easy to transport on our bikes.

So you just blend normal oats and then you can use boiling water like the 'instant oats'?

I'd like to take the sachets or pots to work to use but thought they worked out pretty expensive. I'm deffo going to try the blitzer method.

I've never bought any of those porridge pots but I'm guessing they're just oats, powdered milk & sugar.

they come in similar size pot to a pot noodle. I will try and premix some oats and milk powder when i get paid and have a bit of experimenting.

I actually do this every morning in the winter for DS. He loves to have porridge and I have the kettle on for my coffee anyway. I just pour boiling water over the oats and add sugar. Sometimes he has cocoa or vanilla essence for extra flavour but he chops and changes. Oh sometimes jam too.
I did try with the milk powder but he prefers it without. It's quite hard to get the quantity right when you have 2 starving children and a starving moggie getting under your feet yowling for food :o

    hi all,

I am looking for a recipe for making my own 'instant' porridge.

i want to be able to make porridge with just hot water (no microwave or stove).

the quaker porridge pots in the supermarket make excellent instant porridge but they cost abotu £1 each. From searches online i can only find things from USA where they seem to have different kinds of processed oats.

I want to go to tescos, buy my ingridents, bag it up and then take on the road with me. i have tried doing sainsuburys own porridge oats, 1/2 pure oats, 1/2 blended to powder, add powdered milk. still does not cook itself in hot water. can't figure out how the quaker oat instant pots are different. advice appreicated!!!

    thanks :)

you can make ordinary porridge the night before and then microwave in the morning. I make 3 servings in one go with some whipped cream that i got from the market, even though i live alone.it saves time for the next 2 mornings. Hth
