Egg on toast, what a great breakfast. :)

Yeah but I'm not cooking him egg on toast after his tea and just before bedtime :D . I think he's going to have to get used to sawdust cheapo. I must say I admire Sainsbury's on-box slogan "nothing added, no extra vitamins". Tell it like it is ;) .
    :D I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe :D

    Excellent thread!

I've noticed the price of the cheap baked beans have risen over the years. They started off at 9p a tin whereas Heinz were 32p a tin. If you didn't mind the taste or used them in cooking the cheaper ones really were the value option.

But I noticed the other day in Lidl, their baked beans are now 17p or 18p  a tin (can't remember which - lol), however they were selling 4 tins of Heniz for £1.00, i.e. 25p a tin. For the extra 7/8p I think they are worth it as I do perfer Heinz. DD noticed the other day and said she liked the Heinz beans better so for us looks like we are back to a branded product buying them when they are on offer! :T

It must be 500g or 750g surely?

:o Yes sorry, should read 750g

I don't quite have 150g but close enough. I bought some cereal a few months ago which was 375g and it did me for 3 breakfasts (well I don't think I actually ate any of it in the morning!). Anyway, that works out to approx 125g for each bowlful.
It makes me laugh when I see in diets that they suggest a 30g bowlful for breakfast, that is probably the amount that a baby could fit in their hands!

I get mostly own brand and branded, very rarely get value products. I am counting Lidl as own brand as they don't have a value range. Most things are reasonably priced. Branded things are practically always on offer in one supermarket or another.

Some of the price rises that you guys have mentioned do seem really shocking though. Time to look for alternatives.
  • I have just returned from Mr T's where I dumped my shopping! I always hit the Yellow Sticker section where they were duping people in buying some meat that was reduced to half price but was on Bogof anyway - So no cheaper, and they said the Bogof was NOT available on reduced items anymore - I told them what I thought of them, they said "its the computer" - I said "Well the ******* computer can put this lot back on the shelf then" and walked out.

Luckily I have Aldi, Netto, Lidl, Somerfield, Farmfoods and Morrisons (and another Tesco's) nearbye so I shall not starve!

    P.S.

I have overheard some checkout staff say that people are commenting about prices.

The thing is they say they don't price fix but they blatantly do. The prices are often very similar when I do compare them which isn't very often as I tend to go to my local which is Sainsburys. It is the most convienient to where I live. I know it is more expensive but they do have good deals in there and I shop there knowing what I'm getting price wise.

My local Lidl always has a few fruit and vegetables at half price so I stock up each week, most keep well in the fridge. Today they had 2.5kg boxes of Clementines for £1.49, kiwis for 8 or 9p each plus 3 or 4 others.

You can get FREE yeast from any large Tesco store at the Bakery section, then you can bake your own bread. It is so much nicer and cheaper than bought bread.

The problem for people on a strict budget is they can't afford the price rises so they end up buying less food. :(
