Sounds like the file system has become corrupt. The ACL is Microsoft's attempt at a file permissions table. There may be a hardware fault that caused this. You could try booting from a Windows rescue CD or a Linux live CD, and backing-up first. If you can't use an earlier restore point, then you may have to reinstall the operating system.

Hope you did okay with your exams.

Yeah, Basically the volume has corrupted and to be honest your best bet to recover your data would be to boot from a live cd like asbokid said and just copy and paste all your important data and re-install. This time I suggest you install windows 7 - vista is pretty outdated and flawed in both security and speed.

    I have experienced similar.....

Hard disk had to be replaced, reinstall OS and lost some data - hence I brought a backup drive and now backup from time to time.

Have you tried using the F key (2,8,12??) to do a restore in safe mode/disk error check or can't you get that far?

if you have alternative access to the internet EHOW might give you some ideas:(

Thanks for the replies! Much appreciated.

What do you mean a live cd? Sadly, my computer came pre-installed with vista and did not come with a CD (that im aware of).

I get to "the tech guys" repair center and it gives me "start up repair" which gave me the original error code but no solution. Then "system restore" which always gives an error when i try.

Any of the Linux LiveCD such as this one will allow you to boot the PC from a CD and look at the content of the hard disk - and for example move files (if they still exist) onto an external hard disk or USB pendrive.

You might also like to try SystemRescueCD, which has a number of tools which may help with the corruption.

Make sure that you select Try and not Install.

you need an operating system CD, of the version to match the COA on the laptop, i.e. if the COA is for vista home premium, you'll need a vista h-p CD, or, if your COA is an "OEMAct" type, you'll need the cd from the lappy manufacturer. In fact, they may well give you one for free if you contact them and tell them the hdd is trashed and you need to replace it ;);), or they may charge you for one (but less than buying a full new OS... wherever you get one from, you'll need to do a complete clean install. It's encouraging that you could access your files, prob means hdd is not trashed physically. soz if I'm rambling, can't keep my eyes open .....
