You get two. One for each room. Follow the instructions on where to locate, they will include the British Standard information on siting (6 feet away from device, away from drafts, doorways etc).
As for life of the battery operated ones, the two I recently fitted say they need to be replaced after 5 years. I think some might say 3 years so check the boxes. The battery will trigger a small alarm when it needs replacing, and is not related to the service life of the unit.
As for prices, Woolworths £15 is they have stock, or £18 from Asda, £22 from Tesco (for the no display models). If you were plannign on taking one on holiday etc one with a display might be of some use.
Brown dots? Forget them, you wouldn't use one to warn of fire.0
