The 'pet issue' when viewing homes. Your opinions needed!

Been looking at the ‘look at this’ thread (brilliant by the way!) and it’s got me thinking about the whole pet thing!

I’ve posted it in there but thought I’d re post here as it will get a better response:

Hmmm starting to worry on the pet front now!

We have a small parrot and the agent told us to leave him, just make sure he’s clean and the area around his cage is clean. We also had a mat made of spare carpet to put around him to collect his seed so that the new carpet doesn’t even see the seed or feathers! Lol.

He won’t be in the photo’s (we’re moving his cage out of the way) but if you turned up to view a house and there he was (and he’ll probably start singing once you come in....) would this put people off a home? By the way for size wise of the cage it’s about the size of a display cabinet and as the room is rather large it fit’s in pretty well!

He can go to my parents while the house is on the market, but that means a 30 minute drive there and back every night to see him! (he’s my baby and my mum won’t let him out when he’s used to an hour or 2 out of his cage a night meaning I’ll have to go do it).

It would me. How can anybody concentrate on viewing a house with a parrot singing at them?

Is the parrot included in the sale? If so, definately include in the photos?

I don't see why he'd put anybody off. If I buy the house do I have to take the parrot as well?

Wouldn't bother me in the slightest. Fair enough to move him for the photos, but pets are pets... as long as your house is clean and tidy for viewings it won't matter I'm sure.

I can't see a problem with a small parrot, wouldn't put me off in the least.

I've just bought a house with snakes in four vivariums - guinea pigs in the bedroom - a mad dog - and carpets that I shall strip out before I move furniture in.

I can't believe anyone would be so short sighted as to turn down a house because it has a parrot in a cage in it. I'd keep him there. We conducted viewings of our house with the dog present.

Could you put him in the garden in his cage for viewings? You don't need to move him into foster accommodation!

If it were my house, I'd put him out, clean the floor, move the carpet and air the room thoroughly before viewings. We have a dog and I do my best to de-dog the house, clean everything, air freshener then leave the windows open for a good hour before shutting them just before they arrive. He still lives here, I just move him with H to the park for viewings or I'd ask a neighbour to watch him (although our buyers have a dog so he's here now).

Some people won't be offended by the bird but some people are actually petrified of them. I wouldn't risk it, personally.

    Hi,

We sold our house last year. We have two house rabbits and their pen is about 7ft x 4 ft x4 ft - so not small. We left this in the lounge, it was visible in the photos and it wasn't a problem with anyone who came to view the house. The EA didn't mention it when he took the photos either. The people who bought our house did say they wondered what the structure was when they saw the pictures online but it didn't seem to put people off.

It wouldn't bother me in the slightest, but it would probably be one of the things that I remembered about the house, e.g. oh yes that was the house with the parrot.

However my Mum is terrified of birds and would be straight out of the door as soon as she realised your parrot was there. Not sure how many people feel like this, maybe you could cover the parrot's cage for viewings? If I were you I wouldn't want to remove my pet for the selling period, it could take months (hope not) but it's a long time to be without her.

A parrot really wouldn't bother me, its not as if its going to be able to get out and flap all over me and I can't imagine there being any noticeable smell I would have to worry about when I moved into the place.

I've viewed a house with birds in a cage, geckos (sp) in a vivarium, etc and a few cats wandering around none of which bothered me...
Dogs are another story - why do some vendors think its ok to leave their dog jumping all over you when you try to view a house? I'm not massively keen on them anyway and its really distracting.

Also viewed a house that stunk of dog - not the best impression!
Proud meowmy of four fuzzy cats :)
