lidl plants

Hi, has anyone else had the same experience as me, with plants bought from lidl that don't survive? I bought a jasmine plant a few weeks ago, it looked healthy when I got it, but since I planted it out, despite watering and keeping an eye on it every day it is definitely dead.

Has anyone ever dug up a plant and brought it back to a shop/garden centre because its died like this? Or has anyone any other suggestions?

Thanks

I've been quite pleased with Lidl plants when I actually get them, my local shop seems to have some 'stock issues' but the quality of what actually does make it to the shelves is pretty good. However, almost everything I've bought from the Poundshop has failed to thrive.

Although I'm a bit of a sucker for any kind of offer, I have to admit that the best quality, cheapest and most robust plants I've bought have all come from my local, independent nursery. They also offer advice, free crocks and a free poorly plant section, so I don't know why I bother with anyone else.

I bought 6 blueberrys a year or two ago which when potted up were just sticks with minimal roots, despite TLC they all went to the big compost heap in the sky.

If you're still looking for blueberries, Peter, Doves' Barn Nursery, Felbridge is on the Surrey/Sussex border and their stuff is cheap and excellent quality.

I'm feeling particularly kindly towards them at the moment, on Thursday, their busiest day because that's when they give out the free poorly plants, I got to the till and asked if they'd be nice enough to give me 30 pots for my partner's class of 7 year olds who were about to plant broad beans. I'm fairly regular but not a big spender there but they handed over the pots with a big smile.

Same experience here. I bought a Fuchsia from them a few weeks ago. The price was very reasonable and it looked healthy enough in store but dropped most of it's new flower buds within the first week. With lots of TLC, it's starting to recover, but I would say it's showing all the signs of having been very stressed.

I suspect the plant has either being put in cold storage, light-deprived, or probably both. Either way, the result of poor maintenance and stock control. Not very impressive!

Thanks for the suggestion, I was looking for a few blueberries for myself as we had sold out of our own ones. We often give pots and plants to local schools and "The Lyons" for resale for good causes. You will often find small nurseries are very amenable when a good cause will be helped. We also sell the empty compost bags with the proceeds going to a St Michaels Hospice, over £100.00 last year.

I bought the b&m hibiscus too. I think it should be doing something by now. I still have a twig!

I was given a few plants from B&M and despite following all the instructions only the weigela is doing well.

All the plants I've bought from Wilkinsons are really good but these were all pot grown things rather than bare rooted ones. Actually, no, I bought a box of 3 hostas and they're doing well.

I think with these cheap shops it's a bit more hit and miss than if you got them from the garden centre

I bought 2 blueberries from B&M and only one of them survived. I wish I'd paid the extra money for a better blueberry plant as the one that is alive is absolutely tiny!

ETA: Just had a thought - what if B&M were actually selling sticks posing as hibiscus for £1.99 - they'd have made a killing!

I have bought fruit bushes from lidl which are absolutely fab! They have grown ever so well this year. Couple of pints, make sure that you harden these plants off as they have been indoors and even mildish days will come a slight shock. Secondly, I don't expect too much from lidl plants as they are cheap! Swings and roundabouts I suppose, although if you pay money for summat you want it to work i suppose!

Just say the plants failed & ask for your money back.

I'm sure you can produce receipts & dead plants.

    Simples.
