Hmm, a lot of people have found that fleas have become immune to Frontline products and instead use Advocate ( I think ?? ) instead. Check with your vet or the manufacturer as to how long you need to wait till you can apply the new spot on.
I've always used frontline but have also heard about fleas becoming immune to that.

Can you buy Advocate or do you have to get it from the vet and therefore pay for the consultation as well as the product?

My vet charges £33 plus VAT for the consultation...so that's £40 before you start...!

Smoke bombs from Pets at Home work and so does ACCLAIM spray. I can attest to the last as I had a bad infestation of cat fleas last summer. I sprayed every room in the house and washed every item of clothing and bedding in as hot a wash as possible. it worked as even the tough fleas which survived the initial spraying died and I have been flea free ever since. (although the Cat did move out - with my son - a few months later). I did notice that with my last cat a few years ago - Frontline didnt work as well as it used to.
I cant remember exactly how much the Acclaim spray was - but I think it was around £12.99 a can. one can did my 3bed terraced house.
PS - Dont forget to spray in the airing cupboard if you have one..........fleas love it in there!
  • What can I do about my mattress? I'm getting bitten in bed!!!

I found a single flea on my dog about 6 weeks ago and then found one on my leg when I got in the shower. (It could have been the same flea as I wasn't quick enough to catch it on the dog). The dog was bathed and treated, the cats were both treated and the house was sprayed. I haven't found any more fleas since on any of the animals or in the house, but something is biting me at night. The spray I bought for the carpets says not to use on human bedding but obviously i can't put my mattress in the washing machine!!

I can't afford to replace my mattress.

I think Skoosh sounds good, I hadn't heard of it before. From the vets I got something called RIP which I also hadn't heard of. I soak cotton wool balls with it and put into the hoover bag. Anyway I've had a blitz today so will see how it goes. Haven't been bitten since that early morning problem with dressing gown which has now been hotwashed. I've got plenty of old bites though - ugh!

Btw zaksmum, I just went into the vets and asked for the products I wanted, but I am registered with them so have enough consultations as it is. They did put a note onto my record but certainly I don't pay for consultation each time I go. Today I just paid for 6 months Frontline for cat and dog, which came to £55.08 ( 6 pipettes cat cost £21.83, 6 pipettes dog came to £33.25) No idea how it compares but didn't seem too bad - as long as it does the trick.)

Dog Frontline appears to be useless these days. I've moved to Advantage. If the fleas are that bad, chuck the dog and cat bed away. Acclaim is good. Apparantly there is an injection you can get for the cat for fleas that is supposed to be good.

I had a bad flea infestation last year which is how I know about combatting them, dog had been Frontline'd correctly and the fleas laughed at it. Previous year it had worked.

I have always used Frontline and the cheapest i have found is at PetFleas.co.uk For dogs 10-20kg a 6 pack is £24.98 including p.p.
I was going to change to Advantage as it is supposed to work quicker but most sites say it is prescription only. Found one that is not. Anyone know if discountpetcare.co.uk are ok or anywhere else to get it without prescription. Thanks
