Hi open a window and let fresh air in .If he is finding it hard to breath ask the doctor for some saline drops for his nose.

I echo what everyone else has mentioned. Put karvol/olbas oil on muslin out of reach of baby.
Saline nasal drops are good too.

Lansinoh nipple cream works well in stopping the little nose getting all crispy with snot and fixing soreness.

In addition to paracetamol (Calpol) you can use an Ibuprofen suspension as well or as we found instead (presuming the little one is over 3 mths), the bonus is that it is half the quantity to get in.

Hi, we've also got a snot goblin at the moment. Saline nasal drops are definately useful to have, as is a few drops of olbas/ karvol somewhere bubs can't get at. We also pop a pillow under her sheet to elevate her head. Sophie freaks out if I try and get her with a tissue, but will tolerate a hankie or muslin (and will quite merrily wipe her nose all over me too, charming child) so it might be worth trying something other than a tissue to wipe his nose.

Poor thing - you always feel so helpless when they are poorly. On the plus side apparently there are only a certain number of cold viruses and once they've had one they won't get it again so you can tick one off of his list:j.

My 'babies' are late teens now and I used karvol on a muslin in the room and was also told to put Vicks on the baby's feet at night, put socks on and it helps alleviate a cough - and it seemed to work. If you Google it there are lots of testimonies to it.

My SIL, who has a 16 month old, used one of these and said it was great http://www.boots.com/en/4little1-Baby-Nose-Clear-Nasal-Aspirator_118420/?CAWELAID=334504111&cm_mmc=Shopping%20Engines-_-Google%20Base-_---_-4little1%20Baby%20Nose%20Clear%20Nasal%20Aspirator.

    Hope he's soon feeling better

Thanks for all the advice. He woke about 45 mins ago, had a quick feed, I went to make him some food, came back and he is asleep again.

Im going to sound a total eejit now, but what do I do about his "routine" naps/bedtimes etc while he is ill? Do I do as I would (allow him to sleep/drink/eat) as and when, or do I wake him?

Personally I let them sleep/eat/etc when they like - as you said you would when ill.

As you said you are breastfeeding - breastmilk squirted up the nose often clears stuffy noses well (as well as gunky eyes - in that case breastmilk in the eye not nose)

With regard to your contented little baby,

In this situation we tried to stick to the routine as best we could but cut him some slack regards sleeping in a bit longer/resting.
He still fed at the same times.

I tend to think that sleep is natures best healer and if he is worn out fighting an infection let him sleep. Just make sure though that you keep his fluids up - put him to the breast everytime he wakes - and if you are at all worried and the symptoms get worse or he's not drinking / eating and seems dehydrated take him to your GP. Babies are resiliant little things but can plummet quite quickly so trust your instincts. Am sure he will be right as rain in a couple of days.
