Car hire - credit card deposits

I can't seem to get an answer from any of the car hire companies!
We are due to go to Rome in a couple of weeks and I'm trying to sort out our finances in readiness. I have pre-paid for our car hire through Hertz and at the time was told that 250 euros would be held on my credit card for the excess. I have rang again today to double check and have now been told this is 900 euros!! The credit limit on my card is only £800 with approximately £300 available to spend at the moment. I cannot affort to pay off the other £500 before we go, even if I could it still wouldn't cover the 900 euros they hold.
My husband is the named driver on the rental, his credit card has a £2000 limit with enough available to cover the amount that Hertz want. Will this be acceptable even although the main driver is myself? Does anyone know of any car hire companies who take less than this? I've hired before and never had to have so much available! I'm a little worried about the whole thing now as Hertz will charge me to cancel and all rates have increased since I originally booked.

If he is a named driver, it should be OK. Especially if you have the same surnames.0
