benefit shakeup for the royals

instead of the civil list payment they will get a profit share of the crown estate (why oh why?)

is this a preparation for the disappearance of the royal family perhaps? (or is that just wishful thinking on my part?)

the phrase "sovereign support grant" is very job centre don't you think?

If they aren't getting the Civil List, then surely they should get ALL the Crown Estates income - since that is what was originally given up in exchange for the Civil list payment.

Some King or other - possibly King George III, surrendered the Crown Estate in return for the Civil List. It's been a bargain for the country.

there's no way the royal family could have justified holding onto the crown estate. modern populations just don't work like that. property also comes with the responsibility to provide the means to defend it.

afaik the army are not under direct command of, or paid for by, the royals even if they are nominally described as such.

So how does Charlie keep hold of Cornwall, then?

That, together with his guaranteed job seeker's allowance must be quite lucrative. He's the only guy in UK who can prove there's no suitable vacancy.

    Indeed.

The monarchy currently gets somewhere around 35 million from the civil list. The crown estate generates over 300 million for the nation.

It cost something like £90 million just to have a referendum on the AV vote, so if you scrap the royals and elect a president every 5 years, and it costs £30 million to fund the royals every year, then you need the president to cost less than £60 million over 5 years. It cost $160 million just to swear Obama in. Whilst I know that this is not directly relevant to what a president would cost us, it does suggest that if you think the monarchy should go on the basis of cost, you really don't have a case.

Try more like 8.25 million. It was reduced a hell of a lot and fixed ten years ago.
  • Total royal expenditure paid for by the taxpayer in 2010 was £38m, of which £7.9m was the civil list. Most of the rest is maintenance on the palaces, which to be honest, we'd be paying for regardless of whether the royals lived there or not.

Net income surrendered to the Treasury from the Crown Estate in the same period: £210m

Sounds like a bargain to me.

Doesn't The Times still do this for them on the Court & Social page?

Perhaps they could run a competition to do this for a couple of unemployables. "Dave Scrote will be present at the opening of a bottle of White Lightening bargain cider from Mr Patel's Fagz 'n' Boozerama prior to a lunch engagement with a 99p Value shepherds pie..."
