Point taken, but I was talking within the context of the issue I've encountered where I log in and all my current accounts appear as "Bank Account" with a Halifax logo instead of card.

I only get this if I log in via Bank of Scotland, it always has the card pic if I log in through Halifax
Debt free and staying that way!

I was told about a year ago that new applicants for Easycash a/c's would be assessed on the information in the application and on their credit report and may instead be offered a current account. However, they never said that current customers were being reassessed. The Easycash a/c has more prominence on their website (changed recently), it is the Cardcash a\c you have to hunt around abit for, I do wonder if that is going.

Is there any need for basic bank accounts now that cheque guarantee cards have been withdrawn ?

The withdrawal of Cheque Guarantee cards is surely nothing to do with whether banks offer basic bank accounts. They will continue to need a product that can be given to those who they do not wish to give credit to.

I understand that Electron is being withdrawn

I certainly haven't heard this to be the case.

Many banks are choosing to move away from the Visa Electron brand, and instead offer a card which is basically an Electron card, just branded as Visa Debit, on their basic accounts.

    Bumping this up!

Have you spoken to the Halifax, did they tell you what has happened?

I did speak to the Halifax and my account has been upgraded to a normal Current Account and a new Visa debit card it on it's way. She did say they are doing this to certain Easycash accounts but she wouldn't say how they are choosing them.

I was very surprised as I didn't request any upgrade and it's a shame to lose the Electron in terms of flight bookings.

It does seem as though the Halifax are starting to ditch the Easycash now.

    Same here, nothing has changed
I still need easy current a/c to get Visa Electron, to beat the budget airlines fee and charges ...

If you log on to your online account - it has a picture of the card issued with the account along side it.

I can clearly see "Visa Electron" on my Easy Cash account and "Visa Debit" on my Reward Current account.

It's called a current account, with no overdraft allowed.

Most basic accounts are simply current accounts without an overdraft facility. The only difference is that you get credit checked with a standard current account, but not (normally) for a basic account. Banks could easily merge the two and only do the credit check if and when an overdraft is requested.

I can't stand the electron card, or the card it's self its ugly, but I haven't got much other choice due to my past bad credit!
Ah well - I've rand my account well, I hope I'm one of the 'chosen' ones. OP - have you always ran your account well? IE, no failed SO's or DD's?
Im intrigued as to how they are going to select accounts to upgrade.

My Santander current account started life as a National & Provincial savings account with no credit reference search

I,m amazed you have stuck with the ex N&P accounts,I never managed a year with abbey before I jumped ship after they ruined a great wee building society.

If I get the easycash "upgrade",the account will be closed.
I have a deep burning indifference

I visited a town yesterday and all the banks close at 4.30 pm or earlier , there are (ex) building societies in the town and these close at 5pm

When Abbey National aquired National & Provincial - wasn't it tha case that (ex) building societies had better opening hours than banks (9 -5 plus Saturdays) ?

Also there was no internet banking and Building Societies offered bill payments / transfers via ATMs

The only bank to offer this at the time was TSB

Abbey National declined my current account application - so N&P was a back door route which resulted in a current account and credit card

National & Provincial used to issue credit cards , but declined my application at the time

I closed my B&B account after the transfer to Santander

I still have A&L and Ex- Abbey accounts - I also used to have the Abbey Safeway Instant Plus account

I wouldn't use them as my main account - but keep the accounts open
