best cure for a blocked nose (sinus)

what do you find is best for blocked sinuses, it part of the hay-fever allergy I have which I'm taking tablets for, but leaves a blocked nose......and its very uncomfortable to sleep with.

Someone suggested putting cold salty water up my nose, but not sure I fancy that.....any better ideas?

A commercial decongestant - Sinutab, or the basic cold and flu decongestant? My Ex used too suffer with sinus problems, and he had a spray bottle filled with saline (you can buy sachets of it from the chemist) which he used to squirt up his nostrils - it is effect. It's so safe, you can use it for babies who are bunged up by transfering the saline to a 'dripper' bottle

It could be that although it feels blocked, it's actually the lining of your sinus that is swollen in which case an anti inflammatory like ibuprofen will reduce it, if you are allowed to take them.

  • Go swimming. That'll flush it all out.

Seriously, the salt water sounds gross and isn't the nicest of feelings, but the relief it gives you is incredible - when I got it, I had the face searing, sob in the pillow as I'm dying kind of pain - decongestants OTC are essential to keep in the cupboard for me, but I rarely use them now as the spray sorts out the problem so much better.

Tesco Cold and Flu or Sinus Tablets (they're exactly the same thing!).
  • The breathe easy strips are fantastic.

Only have them on for 12 hours at a time, otherwise it hurts.

I like to wear mine at night time so I can sleep

A few drops of Olbas Oil in a bowl of hot water with a towel over your head to keep the vapours in, or use one of the Olbas Oil inhaler thingies. You can also get the pocket packs of tissues that are infused with it which are pretty good too, just don't do what someone I know did and use them as a replacement for toilet tissue when the public loos had ran out :eek:

Inhaling Friars Balsam in hot water, works a treat.

Avoid overuse of decongestants like Sudafed. They can actually exacerbate the problem if used repeatedly or for too prolonged a period.

You can also use a small plastic syringe with warm salt water. It does seem gross at first, but do it leaning over the wash basin and believe me with a little practice, you do get used to it and it is very helpful and cleansing.
