No private commercial organisation would ever get away with this kind of intimidation. Why should a government owned organisation be allowed?

Because it's a tax. C(r)apita are a private commercial organisation.

Bloody TV licensing letters. When we lived at our last place, I decided to buy a small TV for the bedroom. I had to give my name and address, but thought no more of it. A little while later, I got a letter through the door from them saying they had no record of me having a TV license in my name at that address and threatening legal action.

Well yes, you idiots; that's because the license is in my husband's name. Are you seriously incapable of searching for the existence of a license by address rather than by name?

Our licence is in OH's name, and I buy all the DVD recorders, TVs, etc.

It took six letters to TVL to convince them there was a valid licence for our address, but not in my name.
  • Ah! The delightful TV Licensing people? We don't have a TV. We have not had a TV for over 10 years. We do not watch TV online. This would not be possible even if we wanted too due to our poor rural broadband speeds.

We have had all of the usual threatening letters, we are taking you to court letters etc. I now just shred the letters and do not even open them.

The last we are taking you to court letter we opened I decided to reply to. I told them that I was happy to go to court and prove that we do not have a TV. However, we would then subsequently sue them for loss of earnings, harrasment, fees etc. In the same letter I also withdrew their Implied Right of Access to my property. This means that they would in fact be trespassing if they come into my garden. I also told them that if they did set foot on the property I would film them and put the film onto the internet.

Funny after sending this letter we had a TV detector van park up opposite me. Yes, these vans do exist. I can also assume that they suspected the field of sheep opposite me were watching without a license.

I would have got the camcorder out on public land and filmed them. First to make sure they are parked legally and not causing an obstruction, and second to make sure they are actually working and not pretending to work by sitting in the drivers seat doing nothing. They should of course be in the rear of the van operating the world famous TV detecting equipment. ;)

  • TV licensing WHICH BY THE WAY IS AN UTTER SCAM IN ITSELF has become something you must pay. They will not stop. I had some bloke turn up at my door and i paid the entire year upfront.

Why would you give that pedophile ring any of your hard-earned money?

Really? You just gave 145 quid or whatever to 'some bloke' who just turned up at your door?

Where do you live? PM me your name and address and I'll come a-knocking. (I could do with a bit of extra dosh before Christmas). :)

Yes, I know what you mean. :)
Happened to me too. Had paid like you did, had very rude belligerent man at doorstep demanding to see licence. Actually ended up going to get it after some verbal to and fro-ing. Should have just slammed the door in his face, will do next time.
