I had posted in the mobile section, doesn't seem to be any response. Just wondered if anyone is au fait with jailbreaking iphones.
Mine is already jailbroken but only at ios4, none of the later updates and its slow and crashes etc. I'm not sure if I need to update but then a restore would leave it locked to Vodafone when I need it to be unlocked to 02.
I used jailbreakme SO you can see why I need some help

As far as I know discussing illegal things like jailbreaking isn't allowed on MSE. I'd suggest you consult a different forum for advice on this matter.0

Jailbreaking isn't illegal.
Sadly that's about all I know about it as I don't buy kit that depends on possibly bricking it before I can run what I want to on it rather than what somebody else will permit.
If you want something open don't buy stuff from Apple.0 -

Then you don't know very far. There is a Moneysavingexpert forum dedicated to this

iPhones supplied from the Apple store aren't locked to a carrier. What you should have said was if you want an open one then don't buy from Vodafone.
If the OP takes the phone into a Vodafone shop you can pay for an unlock usually. I've had two done at £20 a time. You can then upgrade to 4.3.1 firmware and jailbreak without having to worry about the carrier lock."A nation of plenty so concerned with gain" - Isley Brothers - Harvest for the World0 -
I assume that you are on an iPhone 3 or 3GS. If you update to a later release you lose the ability to unlock the phone without messing up the baseband. You can jailbreak.
As mentioned above, most of the carriers will unlock a phone that is over a year old for £20. You can then update to the latest OS4.3.3 and Jailbreak to install Cydia etc..

I know jailbreaking isn't illegal, the problem is......
I've had the phone since June, given to me by a friend who owed me some money and thought hey instead of giving you the £200 back I'll give you my 2 month year old iphone. I was happy with that as mine had just died. She said her dad had bought it on payg. I know by her giving me an iphone I sort of lose the warranty and all that but meh.
Anywaaaaaaaaaay, I have no found out that actually she had taken out a 24 month contract with Vodafone two months before and then decided to "abscond" ie stop paying and all that. So she obviously is iether paying a debt to them or being chased by debt collectors. I read that a carrier won't unlock the phone if its still under the contract. So I am cautious about going in and then having the phone taken off me. If that makes sense?
I don't want to do anything to it myself and find I've !!!!!!ed it up. Its jailbroken on the first release of ios 4 and then Its been left alone for fear of killing it. My only other option is to take it to iPatch in Leeds as I know they jailbreak phones but don't know what they do. Think they charge £20 but it doesn't specifiy what type of jailbreaking it is and I can't see how they'd be able to jailbreak it to the latest ios.
Urgh complicated. I'd buy myself a new one, but when one has debt to pay, an expensive phone is the last thing you should be purchasing!Money money money.

Mmmm. You probably have some liability to Vodafone and are receiving effectively stolen goods. You have the possibility of the phone (IMEI) being disabled.
Ignoring that, if it is unlocked currently updating it will lose the lock. Have a go through this menu system to determine when you upgrade whether you will be able to unlock: http://iclarified.com/unlock/index.php

Thanks I will have a look through. I had come across that website before but panicked when I read something about upgrading to a certain baseband which then means you can't downgrade if it goes wrong. argh!
I guess you can see my concerns then! I don't want to take it to Vodafone to be phoneless but at the same time I understand the slight moral ambuigity, or not so slight, surrounding how I came into ownership of the phone. Because I guess even though her account would have got to a debt collector, the phone would still be property of Vodafone?
If I have to I will leave it as it is and nag my dad for his upgrade in a few months.Money money money.

To add to that, I went through the wizard and it doesn't really help me in working out whether I can update the IOS from 4.1.0 or not so I am just going to leave it. I've gont onto Cydia and updated Ultrasnow and I have no idea why but my iphone seems to be running fasterMoney money money.
