I used to see lots of young kids who were in boarding schools in the UK getting flights back to places like HK as UMs. I guess it will really depend on him, if he is shy and does like to be away from parents then no, if he is an extrovert and is happy being around stangers then could be OK.

My SD uses the UM schemes to visit her family (she's 10). They are very safe and she is checked in/signed for at every point that she is handed over to a new person so they know exactly where she is. Having said that she doesn't exactly enjoy it and the flights she goes on are only short. She is very used to flying having travelled several times a year since she was tiny. I think Aus would be a long way for such a small child (for anyone really!) to travel on their own. The stewards do check on them often but they obviously can't sit with them constantly. I would say 6 is a little young for such a long flight, can you not visit him? They charge additional fees to cover the cost of supervising the child anyway so it might be cheaper for you to book flights for yourself.

My heart would be in my mouth if I had to let my 17 year old fly to Oz on his own.

    Honestly ?

I'd be more concerned if my 17 year old wanted someone to accompany him/her ;)

    Yes, the service is excellent.

I think the minimum age is five, so it would be a possibility. Ask the airline (BA?) for details, and see if they can provide a number in Australia so that his mother could find out about it and decide whether she feels that it would be a good idea for him. Children vary enormously, so while this experience would be fine for some six-year-olds it would be out of the question for others, and only some-one who has recent day to day experience of him could decide whether it is a good idea.
