  • I had considered accepting the job on their terms then contesting that they were underpaying me once secure in the position. I decided against it as i cant see myself being happy there and im not sure they wouldnt just get rid of me? Perhaps I should consider reporting them if they turn me down?
  • So I have been offered a 40hpw contract at £12,334 per annum which is the bare minimum £5.93 an hour, Im going to take it as it was like getting blood from a stone to get even that much!

I'm undecided about the accommodation but arguably with board included it makes sense for £166 per month. (even if it should be £128 :P)

Thankyou to everyone for your advice it has been much appreciated.

Have you told them about the accomodation rules?

    If not stay quiet.

You can always get the moeny back later if you leave by putting in a complain then just make sure it is identified as an accomodation deduction

My guess is you will find yourself working more hours for no more money anyway.

This is probably how it will pan out, in any case like you say i can always claim back some money later and I will be keeping my own record of hours worked to stay on top of it. You have to have quite a cynical perspective to avoid being taken advantage of in the hospitality and catering industry it seems.

At the end of the day I am just glad to have some full time work as I've been stuck making pocket change in part time jobs for the last year, I will keep looking for a better alternative.

And will that record be "provable" if the employer choses to disagree?
  • They have a clocking in/out timesheet for staff which is used to pay those on a hourly wage and I will be using this and keeping my own duplicate record. At the moment we (myself and the head chef) are still working out how many average shifts 40hours equates to and will be adjusting working hours accordingly. They've given no indication whatsoever that they will pay overtime for extra hours worked, so I will have to take time off in lieu, either as extra holiday or on a day by day basis (i.e I work untill 11pm rather than 10pm on a busy night, but start at 12am rather than 11am the next day)

The head chef suggested this and it sound fair.

There is an undertone of expectation that being on salary means that they can pay you less and expect you to go above and beyond when they want you to. I am just going to have to deal with it as best I can, its the way the company is run.

As for the accommodation there should be a record of deductions on my payslips, in addition I have given them a letter of acceptance detailing the terms I am agreeing to in accepting the job. I will still be requesting written confirmation of the job particulars.

If you have any other suggestions (other than dont work for these cowboys :P) it'd be good to hear them!
