Let the previous tenant chase it up, and the energy company will contact you eventually. Being honest from your end is just wasting time if they can't find the previous tenant. The previous tenant may:
1. have moved to China, gone travelling,
2. become hospitalised, or dead,
3. not leave any forwarding address because they left debts behind,
4. treat any contact attempt as a trap, because they are slimy.
1000 units at 10p a unit is £100. The time wasted by all parties trying to give it back is probably worth more than that.0
