a stupid mistake as a youngster comes back to haunt me

Hi All.
I am now a 26 year old student who is getting married and settling down, but during my crazy days as a teen I run up a few credit cards and then run. I thought I had payed off my past when I hit the system when I first got to university. After paying off one or two cards I checked my credit report with experian and everything was clean so I put it out of my mind and started acting like an adult.

I have recently got a credit card to help with the cost of my wedding and university, I thought I might as well have another look at my credit report when getting this and it was clean apart from the new credit card from lloyds.

I have now been getting letters from Lowell asking for money from barclaycard. I remember having an account with barclays when I was a kid so no doubt I have run off with some of their money as well. The thing is that its not shown on my credit report anywhere and why has it taken this long for them to contact me.

There is no way I can afford to pay them as I am still in full time education, can anyone give me some advice. I think the last time I would have used barclays was way back in 03.

Regards
Jez

I would check all of your credit reports with the 3 main companies - and if there is definately nothing on there and you havent acknowledged anything since 2003 I would simply ignore

upon further inspection there is a mention of Barclaycard but only as a linked address on 30/11/2003. Would you still suggest an ignore policy?

    Re: Account Number ##########

I have been receipt of a number of letters requesting payment of an alleged debt concerning the account number noted above.

I should respectfully request for you to check your records and determine that should such a debt exist it shall be covered under Section (5) of the Limitation Act 1980 (relating to the amount of time passing between now and the time the alleged debt was incurred).

Please note that I do not recognise this alleged debt and under no circumstances shall I acknowledge that these are monies legitimately owed.

I request that you confirm in writing that this is the case, that you shall not send any further letters and look forward to hearing from you.

    Yours sincerely

    Etc
(Don't sign it, print your name).

Lowell's tried it on with me too, don't listen to them just point out that it's statute barred. The letter above is basically a transcript of exactly what I sent to them. May be some better stuff knocking around, but it worked for me.
Debt free, moved, got new stuff for the new flat - got everything I wanted and need - now just saving.

Check your other reports - not all companies report to all credit reference agencies. It may be that Barclaycard have are only reporting to Equifax or CallCredit.
My posts are my own opinions based on my experiences and info gathered from sites such as this.

Why shouldnt you pay it off? The idea of credit cards is you borrow money on them and then PAY it off, not run away!

Regrettably, there are far too many people on this site who seem to find that idea totally unpalatable !!

There's no such thing as a "joint card" and, as such, the satisfactory management of it will do nothing for your partner's credit rating.
