Upgrade to iPhone Strategy?

I am currently on a Vodafone Contract and due to upgrade in a couple of weeks.

I want an iPhone!

Does anyone have any tactics/strategy they have used to reduce the line rental and or upfront cost of an iPhone on Contract.

I know the new iPhone is rumoured to be getting released in the summer so this may increase my power for a iPhone 4?

    No. In a nutshell.

It would seem that the networks are contracted to sell the iPhone 4 for a certain price. Whilst there will be a new phone out at some point, there is nothing confirmed, so this won't give you any leverage with Vodaphone.

    Sorry

Forget it. Apple control the prices and tarrifs.

The only way you'll get a discount is through corporate discounting if your comany uses Vodafone and there is an agreement or by going through a cashback site.

Iphone 5 may be out in June or it may be September, but history shows Apple will not reduce the cost to clear stocks. When they announce iphone 5, iP4 will most likey then be reduced till iPhone 5 is released and then IP4 will either be pulled from the market or be changed (the 3GS was available in 16 and 32gb when it was the flagship device, When Apple release iPhone 4 they pulled all stocks of the 3GS as it was and now you can only buy the 8GB variant).

Theres the old saying 'I want, never get'

One of the main rumours is that the new iPhone will be a 'simpler' version of the iPhone 4, whatever that means. Could well mean that the currnet iPhone would be reduced in price, at all.

Read other threads here. Maybe ask what others are paying for Iphones on Vodafone. Get a target price in mind ... then when you are at the end of your contract ... request your PAC and see what they can do.

    Don't just _upgrade_.

Been there done that, (in fact there was one day left on the PAC when I upgraded) and got nothing off and no discount. (I was on a £35 PCM tarriff before I upgraded)

Good advice for most phones but annoyingly not for iPhone. All the mobile co's do it for a similar price you unlikely to get any discount other than the ones I said above.

I'm with O2 and the iPhone 3GS is free on all contracts. The minimum is £21.50pm and this is over a two year period.

The minimum amount to pay per month for a 'free' iPhone 4 is £42pm..

    Thanks everyone for your posts.

I knew the apple / iPhone brand was strong but didn't know it was that strong!!

Looks like I'll have to stump up or be sensible and get a different phone for a lesser price.

    Thanks again.

Not so much strong as they dictate what the users pay and what they can do with their product .

SGS2 O2 PAYG £399 dual core one to consider .

You could move providers. I moved from orange to 3 to a iphone 4. £29 upfront, £35 a month, 500 mins, unlimited texts and unlimited internet. Im paying less than what i was to orange but getting more!

Three is £35 PCM and £29 upfront, thats a 24 month contract so £869 over the contract.
Vodafones nearest tarrif (600 mobile mins, 3000 landline mins, 250 text, 500mb internet)24 months is £30 PCM and £139 up front = £979 over the 2 years.
02 is £37 PCM and £141 for the phone = £1029 over the contract
Orange is £35 PCM and £119 for the phone = £959
    T-Mobile is £35.74 PCM and the phone £99.99 = £957.75

I know the texts and internet are different but it was the closest minute wise. Point is that there is very little over the course of the contract with any provider other than Three who arestill tring to build a customer base by charging less. Problem is there network coverage can still be patchy in places. Paying less but having less coverage at your home location may not make sense, but people still go for the cheapest option in many cases.(Three is terrible where I am, no point using it!)
