Unfortunatly prescriptions are only free for humans i'm afraid, would be nice though
Now it depends on whether the medication is a 'P' which means it can be sold over the counter but as previous posters have said never say it is for an animal as it is not licensed as such.
If however it is a 'POM' it is a prescription only medicine and therefore will need a prescription in order for it to be issued, most chemists will do this for you and add a small prescription charge, usually only a couple of quid. They may need to order it in for you though so might be worth ringing up first:hello: Hiya, I'm single mom, avid moneysaver and freecycler, sometimes  but definatly0 -
My American friends use this site (No NHS and so they shop around) and they sell it:

thanks - I did think I was being a bit hopeful in getting them free
I will now go see if my vet will give me the prescription - but I just know if they do they will charge me for it, anything to get more money out of me!!! knew I should have become a vet!!

Check with that site I gave you because often if you have had them before they will give them to you again. I know that with USA vet supplies people can buy some things without advice so long as they take the responsibility of any comebacks upon themselves.
I know that here you can buy the same things in shops aimed at farmers, stables, etc far cheaper than you can get them in a vets that cater for pets. Presumably because pet owners require detailed advice but farmers know enough about livestock not to need detailed advice about how to use sheep dip or how much of a drug to give to a horse or a cow.
Basically with a vet you have a comeback if something goes amiss but if you buy it yourself you do not. You buy it you are responsible for it.0
