what seems strange to me is that...if it was just inputted incorrectly be the job centre (say a digit or two wrong?) the odds of it actually reaching a bank account that belonged to someone are slim to none. The sort code would have to match the account number of the person's whose bank it was getting paid into.

I accidentally put the wrong account number into a benefit claim a few years back and within 3 days the job centre had retrieved the money as the account wasn't the right one.

I might just be speculating but the only thing that I can imagine it is, is that the OP has given the details of someone she does in fact know but perhaps doesnt speak to anymore (perhaps an ex?) and this is the reason she can't access payments. I can't for the life of me understand why it has taken so long to clear up if it wasn't the OPs fault?

This is disgusting. Staff error because some over confident staff member didn't double-check details. Not only are you being shafted but the taxpayer is too. They are likely to write off the payment into someone elses bank account but its not implied that anyone depositing money into someones bank account means that the person can keep whatever money is put in there. I would say for the bank account owner not to return the money (after all it will contain YOUR NI number) is fraud.

Law exists to obtain the money back... but seems Jobcentre Plus are too happy to wash their hands from this ordeal - after all its not their money. I guess its too much effort correcting their mistake. No wonder why billions of pounds are lost in "official error" each year. Can someone claim benefits into my bank account? :D haha. On a serious note this policy of forgetting about funds need to be abolished. I also cannot see why a bank statement isn't enough instead of having to do an QB42.

After all the general concept of benefits is... after an initial assessment of entitlement the money keeps rolling in (with signing on etc. too) at the same rate on the trust element that claims report changes of circumstances which is a legal requirement or decide they no longer wish to claim. This is how much fraud is committed as declarations are proven as fact until proven otherwise. So you fabricated a bank statement... unless it looks extremely fake it should be treated as proper. Person prosecuted at a later date if it happens the money went in all along (but they know from their records that it was paid into the wrong account, highly unlikely a bank is going to correct a payment lol)
  • I am experiencing a similar problem. I have recently found myself a single parent with a 6year old and I am pregnant. I applied for Invome Support via telephone and the Op has incorrectly entered my bank account details by 2 digits.

Now because I signed the papers the job centre told me to "sign here" I have agreed to this wrong bank account, genuine mistake. DWP will not trace or recall the payment as it is "my fault" and I need to take it up with my bank yet my bank (coop) have advised they can not do anything due to data protection . They said if they even had a letter from IS or DWP stating what happened they can then inform customer. But DWP will not even write a letter. So no one will do anything and my 3months back pay money is left for someone else because of a genuine mistake and there is nothing I can do about it.

I am so stressed over all of this :'( it is so unfair
