Anyone got a Trailer Tent?

Agreed there is a difference between FC's and TT's- a FC is almost a caravan/trailer tent hybrid.
Anyway, we had an old Raclet TT for a few years. The big advantage was the fact that you can store pretty much all your gear in it (weight dependant) when you're travelling. Ours took quite a while to put up (longer than it takes me to put our 7 man tent up, alone) but that was mainly due to the enormous, double length awning it had. There was tons of room once set up though- we were a family of 6 and never short of space.DTD...Dreading The Detox.0 -
get a folding camper they are fab! and only take 15 mins to set up ( main cabin ) and can be used without an awning for short trips ( unlike a trailer tent)
also the beds can be left made up and store loads of stuff in the camper.
only been away in ours twice for wkends so far as we haven't long bought it,but we plan to do lots more between now and Oct !
lots of discussion etc here : http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/chatter/display_forum_topics.asp?ForumID=10
Rachie B do you mind me asking which one you went for. Currently looking at TT and FC (already checked out ukcampsite and registered)
I would prefer a FC but price of TT generally a lot cheaper. Two young children and i prefer the idea of some dining seating off ground etc and easier for quick one nighter weekends away and such0 -

we originally planned to get a TT,but then started looking and researching...
ended up paying £3.5k for a 2007 Conway Continental FC !!! lol
best thing we ever did though I LOVE it and only been away in it twice so far
I love having proper comfy beds and the sofas etc
it's fab
we do a lot of 1 or 2 night camping and this way you can just hitch up and go ! most stuff is left in the camper ( will take out over winter) so we just need to add clothes & toiletries and then food
it will also allow us to have a longer camping season

Yes we have started looking at older TT off ebay for a few hundred and now I'm looking at Pennine's and Conways FC only 4 or 5 years old thinking they look nice!
I would also love to see a Dandy in the flesh as the concept is fantastic and potentially extends the season even further and no worries about weather when your packing up
I can see this becoming expensive!0 -
think of it as a family investment0

I'm keeping my eye out for a small TT or Folding caravan that I can tow behind the car for rallies etc. Sadly speaking they seem to go for more than I can afford
My folks had a 1980s Conway Cruiser for many a year and we had some great trips in it as a family.Proud of who, and what, I am. :female::male::cool:0 -
We have a dandy folding camper ( google it) and it is flipping lovely! I'd definitely go for a fc over a tt - far more like a caravan to live in - comfy beds, under floor gas heater sink and cooker in the unit etc. However it isn't big- we take a pup tent for the kids to sleep in. I can put it up in less that 5 mins with held from my 11yr old for instance. the dandy is made of lorry siding quality PVC rather than canvas do will pack up wet without trouble and is extremely weatherproof.0

Dandys are just wonderful- especially the older ones from the real peak of dandy making ( ours has a heater, and is insulated) - they look like the reliant Robin of the fc world - an acquired taste - but they are lovely. And yes you can pack them up wet if you have to but packing them up in gusty wind is an entertainment fir the rest of the campsite:rotfl:0 -

Tracking a couple of Destiny's on ebay to see what they go for. Mid 90's white and pale blue ones seem to be in right sort of budget. Wouldn;t really want to go older than that if nothing else because I'm not a brown and orange colour fan
Only worry with the Destiny is moving around on driveway manually as we are on an upwards slope. I believe they weigh something like 750kg and you cannot fit a motor mover to these models
Off at weekend to have a look at a dealer to check out Conways, Pennines etc just to see a few in the flesh so to speak0 -
Bitsy_Beans wrote: »Used to go camping and then after youngest was born we sold all our stuff. We currently borrow my parents caravan (who have to tow it for us) and this basically means we have one weeks holiday away from home a year. Now I am not complaining about that single week, we're very lucky compared to some BUT I would really like to have a few more weekends away. So I wondered what trailer tents were like? Are they worth it? Are they quicker to put up than a tent and a bit more robust or just a waste of time? H doesn't really want to go back to full on camping or glamping considering the stuff we took with us
so is a trailer tent a good mix of the two?
Any experiences or comments welcome.
Hi Bitsy - we have had a trailer tent since our children were young. Now both grown up but they still have fond memories of our camping trips.
Haven`t used it for about four years and have seriously considered selling it. Although when we do open it up for airing I get very nostalgic.
It take about an hour to put it up including all the pegging out. Has 2 double beds and underbed tents (children used to love sleeping there).
Storage wise you can leave all your equipment packed into the cupboards in the cabin when you are not using it. Also you can pack everying in the trailer when towing so have lots more room in the car.
We originally borrowed a relatives trailer tent and then decided to buy one. We bought it second hand from another local family who`s children had grown up. It may be worth having a look at a few to see what you think.0
