So assuming Orange is not going to give me a new handset, does that mean i'll have to buy one from them on a PAYG tariff and they'll transfer my number and remaining credit i had?

Let's see if i'm getting thing right:
That new handset will be locked to Orange won't it?

In the meantime, if the above takes ages to do as proven so far, i buy a PAYG phone deal at CPW, it will be unlocked but i will definitely have a different number and possibly a different network.
Will it be possible in the future to swap the Orange SIM with my present number (and credit) and insert it in the CPW handset and use it?
I'm asking because if so, it would make sense for me to choose a better suited handset at CPW and a really really crappy one at Orange. Unless you have an argument against doing that?

By the way, maybe this is relevant, what is the difference between the IMEI and the Serial numbers of a handset?

    Thanks for bearing with me.

    You don't have to buy.
They have to send you a replacement sim that will have the remaining credit on it.

The same applies to e2save, mobiles.co.uk and onestopphoneshop
    Do you want 101%?

    International Mobile Equipment Identity

Why a manufacture's serial number has to follow some international standards?

If orange are not going to send you a phone then get one from CpW or where-ever. Buy a decent one. Then ask orange to send you your replacement sim. When the orange SIM turns up, pop into the new handset.

You will be left with another sim card with a tenner on it from the PAG phone purchase but you can either use that for specific calls or give it away.

There is no need to ever buy a phone directly from Orange.

If orange forget ever having spoken to you they will charge you a tenner for a replacement SIm, call customer services first to find out what id you need and nominate a local orange store to collect it from. The sim is just a bog standard SIM. It doesn't matter if the store pick sim a,b or c- all that matters is that orange assign that sim to your account. It should take more than 5 minutes in store.

If you are really peed of with orange you can ask for a release code so that you can take the phone number to another provider. No idea what happens to your credit though

The handset from CPW will probably be unlocked- check first- one from an Orange store is extremely likely to be locked.

All you need from Orange is a replacement sim card (tagged to your acc). The money on the account is yours so they cannot refuse to give a replacement SIM but they can charge a nominal fee (a tenner)

TBH the free phone would be a crap one that would cost you £10-£20 at CPW. I would just go out and get one rather than waiting, the replacement sim is the only thing you have to get from them

    Thanks imaginarynumber, it's clearer now.

Because before this thread, there was not a lot i knew about mobile phone at all.
The one i just lost was my first one, i bought it in 2007 out of necessity more than anything else.
