ATM Charge in USA for Nationwide Debit Card?

When in NYC in October I had been using Bank Of America ATM's with my Nationwide Debit Card without charge. Just before we were leaving the hotel to go to the airport to come home, I realised I was about $20 short of the cab fare. The hotel had an ATM in the lobby which said it would charge $2.50 for the transaction but this has never appeared on my statement and I got the same cracking exchange rate as I had everywhere else.

That's how I avoid being charged as I can't remember on top of my head the name of the banks which doesn't charge for withdrawals.

that's why i choose "bank of america" ...as it's sort of easy to remember and has amazingly good coverage of the states
