Best way to sell a house privately

I know you can't advertise on Rightmove unless you're an EA, but are there any other, similar and well used websites where I could advertise my property?
I refuse to use a regular estate agents as I believe they do very little for their money, and it's only the publicity on rightmove (or similar) that generates sales - either that or for-sale boards outside and I can make my own version of one of those!
Any success stories out there of selling your home privately, or do you think EA are worth their weight in gold?

Eight years ago when it was booming we put a sign in our garden and sold it the following day but its not that simple this time around.
We looked at different options. If you want to get on rightmove but not pay the EA fees online agencies might be an option.
We did look at it as the fees are from about £300 but we decided against it as I'm a little skeptical at handing over a lump of cash before the sale as I fel theres no incentive for them to sell.
We decided on a traditional EA and feel we've made the right choice with all the palava weve had going on.0 -

So.... how many houses have you sold, either since Rightmove launched, or in total?0 -

Yes, I have sold/bought privately, but not in today's market.
I have also sold via an agent, when their fee was amply covered by the price they achieved, but also not in today's market.
Personally, I don't care what EAs 'do' for their money, so long as they sell my house at a price I'm comfortable with. I'm not in the business of moral censure.0 -

Sold? Don't know - you'd have to ask the people that bought my houses. Bought? Every house I've bought or been interested in has been because of browsing Rightmove. I certainly NEVER go into an estate agents to be given all their sales banter that doesn't work on me. If I'm interested in a property it's because I've seen a For-sale board (either EA or homemade) or because I've seen them on Rightmove. Who the hell has the time to go around every single estate agency in a town and to be fed a load of rubbish?!0 -

Yes, Mr Antagonistic, I know exactly. But how do I know if the people that bought my homes did so because of the estate agents aggressive selling techniques (or rather, lack of them (usually)) or because they saw a For-sale board or details on the internet. I imagine that most of the homes that I've had and sold would have sold themselves because of location, size, uniqueness.
My whole point of this post was to establish a website where Joe Bloggs can sell his own house at a lower fee than the average estate agent because, in my opinion, they do very little for their money above and beyond what we're all capable of doing (i.e. internet advertising and putting a board up outside).0 -

Costs from £25 to £99
Next step is to use an online estate agent such as Hatched, 121Move, House Network etc. Cost around £500 no commission. This gets your property into rightmove.
Finally a high street agent and they will rob you blind.
Perfect, thank you for this. The exact answer I was looking for :T0 -

Well, originally you said "it's only the publicity on rightmove (or similar) that generates sales", but now you're not sure if it is....0
