Can anyone tell me how I can organise, or have access to my boyfriends bank account, without it no longer being a joint account?
Due to him working abroad in the week, I sort out things like cheaper car insurance, pay the garage when I collect his car, pay for his car tax, etc. My time with him is precious and I don't want to be doing those things on the one day that I see him and have his bank card to hand. (In other words, he hands me his bank card, so that I can do his transactions for him in his presence.)

why doesnt he set up a direct debit into your account to cover these costs?

if he signs an authorisation from his bank, it is possible for you to have access to it.

    sounds a bit dodgy tbh!

if he wanted you to have access to it, why wouldnt he just give you a bank card to use?

He could set up online banking, and give you the passwords.

You can tell a lot about a woman by her hands..........for instance, if they are placed around your throat, she's probably slightly upset. ;)

When I was in the Army and away for long periods of time, my then girlfriend, now my wife used to have to manage things like my mortgage, car insurance etc..
I banked with Natwest at the time and they have something called third party access (TPA) where i could nominate her to use my account as if she was me. Involved going into the branch signing some forms etc etc. When she logged onto her own bank accounts online mine came up too with (TPA) showing.

agree with del, he needs to be willing to do this and ask the bank for a 3rd party mandate. It's not very common so the teller would look at you blankly. So you may need to ask for the office manager.

I'd never ever advise password sharing. If his account gets hacked, and it canm be shown you had access wgen he couldn't eg away on work, then he's stuffed - giving password away once renders account insecure, no compensation due. (ex banker here, that's how we used to play it anyway! PINS and passwords are for your personal use only).

    Do it properly :-)

I've just done this with my parents' accounts. We had to have a meeting at the bank with all the usual proofs of identity but it was very easily done. It still feels weird signing a cheque that doesn't have my name printed on it.

Thanks del76, I think you are the one who really gets it.

I do have my own bank card for his account, and the account is in joint names, so that I can do everything for him when he's away for 6 days a week.
It's the same circumstances that del76 had being in the army.
    Nothing dodgy at all !!!

Sorry I dont understand, or Im missing something, you said in your first post that the account wasnt a joint account.

No problem then! You have as much right to access it as he does, so you can do all the stuff you said needs doing. If you need to speak to anyone on his behalf, creditors etc, then just get him to write a letter of authorization and sign it, giving you permission, and Robert is your uncle!:) We did this when oh worked away, and things needed sorting from time to time.
  • I do organise and have access to my boyfriends bank account, it is a joint account, with my name on it, and I want to be able to do exactly the same things that I do now for him, but without it being a joint account.
