We suffer the same nightmare and with two girls with D width feet (one having previously measured a C width) I recommend Startrite over Clarks.
However, recommend is somewhat inaccurate. I find it exasperating that we can find non school shoes that fit well easily, so can't understand why school shoe shopping is so difficult. And that is without mentioning the diabolical quality of school shoes in this size range (6 ish.) I'm curious as to what some children are wearing to school. We still need relatively flat, hard wearing supportive shoes that aren't extremely ugly or as flimsy as ballet pumps. My girls are still in primary school but we're shopping in the size 5-7 range.
I'm so incensed by our experience that I've even considered going into school shoe manufacturing (but how dull would that be?) Clarks & Startrite: please sort this out!0 -

I remember my Mum having nightmares trying to find shoes for me as a child as my feet were so narrow. Never could have Clarks shoes as they didn't fit and their measuring was always wrong for me. We had a regular trip to Russell & Bromley's and I had the same style shoes in different colours for about 5 years! They always measured by hand and checked the fit thoroughly from what I can remember. It may have been Start-rite shoes then but I can't remember that well, but definitely remember the Russell & Bromley shop.0

i also used to get Start Rite shoes when I was little as my feet were narrow, sister had Clarks as her feet were really wide and used to struggle to get a G width to fit, they didnt do H fittings in those days.
hated shopping for school shoes as between the 2 of us we would be trailed around the shops for the whole day
Luckily son is fairly average so doesnt struggle getting shoes, only problem is he is really fussy so still a faff0
