confused about BT contracts!!

I had no idea, until I asked for a MAC code today, that I was in a rolling contract with BT. I've been with them for years, and my last 12 month "deal" with them was started last year (I thought May, but apparently March). I was looking to move from BT before my current deal was put in place - they offered me something better and I agreed to stay, for 12 months (I would never tie in for longer than 12 months). It was all sorted out over the phone, and the advisor never mentioned anything about an automatically renewing contract, or rolling contract or whatever it's called (con springs to mind!)
Anyway, I've just read on another website, a quote from BT saying "....the rolling contract only affects customers signed to its Option 1 broadband package..." - I have Option 2.
Mind you, on the same page another quote says “Customers are very clearly reminded in writing with around 30 days notice when their contract is coming up for renewal that they will be entering into a new 12-month period unless say that they do not wish to do so. If they wish to leave at this point, they can without charge...." - and I have had no such communication. (I don't seem to be the only one they don't write to :shocked:
So...can anyone clarify...is this rolling contract only applied to Option 1, and did the nice customer service man make a mistake?
Also.....I've read over and over about this letter that BT apparently send people (the one I didn't get). Each thing I've read seems to indicate that this is a standard letter that BT have to send so that the customer is aware of the "new" contract or whatever...BUT..2 people that I've spoken to today (that's BT people) have both told me that BT are NOT obliged to send out any letter.
now I am more confused.....:question:
I've also read (on this forum I think) that Total Broadband customers get a reminder call when there 12 months is up - to renegotiate I suppose - this bit rings true, as I'm sure they have always rung us in the past. Not this time tho.....
Trouble is I've read so many things and I don't know what's right and what's not.
Would someone be kind enough to clarify the situation with these "contracts" (for want of a better word, as I thought a contract was something that was mutually agreed, but hey...)
