Bank Error in my favour... What to do???

I wouldn't touch the "money", whether or not you call them.
It's not "real money" - just a misrepresentation to you as to what the real balance is.0 -
Call the bank. If you move it you may suddenly find that it is corrected by the bank without them contacting you. It's very easy to debit a credit card to correct an error, i do it every day at work. Your integrity may be questioned if you just leave it where it is, the bank will realise that you know it's happened, if you start spending it then it doesn't look too good on you does it ?
So you are saying if I do transfer it to another account, and the bank realises and asks for the money back, are you saying that even if I have the money there to return to them, they can still look at me in a bad light???0 -

If you left a wallet with a couple of hundred quid in a friend's car. Then 3 days later, realised that he must have it, and asked him for it, he went to his safety deposit box, took it out and he gave it back to you. Would you be annoyed if you'd seen that friend 3-4 times in those 3 days and he'd not said anything to you?Debt free, moved, got new stuff for the new flat - got everything I wanted and need - now just saving.0 -
As a previous poster has said, tell them and ask for something for your honesty - you might not get it but its better than the alternatives.
The error WILL be noticed, no company is going to sit on a 9 grand debit on their suspense accounts for long, the funds will be taken back and if you've spent any of it you'll potentially find yourself incurring interest/charges.
Also, if you do try and get the credit card co to pay it back to you it will be picked up by money laundering/security checks, no CC company is going to pay £9k back without verifying where it originates from.Proud of who, and what, I am. :female::male::cool:0 -

Pointless example given this is a faceless organisation and not a mate. I agree that the OP should do the right thing, but it's hardly as if the OP and the bank are bezzie mates!BCSC Member 70:j

Duh !! Can't believe you asked that question !
The money doesn't belong to you, you should leave it where it is and let the bank know so that they can adjust your account. Do the words honesty and integrity mean anything to you ? From your reply i gather the answer to that one is - no.0 -
You asking the question shows what you're thinking of doing isn't right.
Nothing good will come of it.0 -
Great post... got everyone biting...
We all know that morally we ought to act with integrity and revel in the gains that these positive actions provide... however... its interesting to see what price makes a persons boundries change... what would these members responses for morality be if this case in question was only say £12 pound added to your card...
Would everyone be banging on about integrity still ?? I doubt it.. I say start using another card if you have one available to continue your usual spending routine...
In the back ground you should try and enjoy the experience whatever the outcome is... who knows, you may have extra pennies in the future if this goes undetected... it may be rectified next week...
Most importantly enjoy the dreams this experience has generated! If you do or if you dont have an extra £9 grand available for free, you will definately know what you would spend it on !!
Good luck and Enjoy!0 -
No question about it - you contact the bank. You know the money isn't yours and you know they will realise the mistake at some point so just get it cleared up and give it back.0
