Halifax im so mad with them

Ok back last Tuesday about 4am i made a booking with the Trainline for the sum of £37.40 by my Visa debit card and went to pick up tickets a couple of days later and after that i have found that i have been charge double and the trainline have taken the £37.40 as its showing on my online account but the other £37.40 is just sitting on my account but i cant get at it.

i have been told that they auth the sum at check the funds are in the account but they wont take it and it will just fall back onto the account but i have been told by bank that there is nothing they can do and also the trainline cant do anything about it and they only took the 1 payment so i am stuck with a payment that i cant get at just sitting in my account.

So who is to blame? and as the booking and payment was done last tuesday when will it go back onto account that i can get at?

no one seems to want to take the blame for it.

also hope i do not get a costs as it made me get a - balance

so with the 2 bank holidays what day should it be that i can take it out?

Why are you mad at the Halifax? The Train Line have authorised, then debited, so you should be mad at them.

This is very common with The Train Line and will take about 3-5 working days for the auth to drop.

Perhaps someone is trying to teach you a lesson for paying a booking fee to The Train Line when you could easily book through a train company website and not pay the fee!!

This is NOT the Halifax's fault, so I wouldn't bother being mad at them.

The problem lies with Trainline and the merchant they use to process payments. They have done an auth and then a charge and not cancelled the auth, so it will pend for a few days then fall back into your bank account. With the bank holidays it can take up to 4-7 days. I have had this happen. But it is not the fault of your bank. That much is true.

auth usually 3 working day after that it disappears & yr balance is adjusted - when you use a debit card the merchant applies for authorisation, when this is given the merchant then needs to process this into a debit to yr account, if after 3 days they haven't processed it the 'hold' on yr money disappears BUT they still have 6 months to process the debit. The majority of business process asap 'cos they don't get their money until they do, but I've known some retailers be a week or more, depends on their own internal proccessing of their banking. As these are guaranteed payments they cannot be returned, & as far as Halifax are concerned they are not in control of this process, for all they know you could have made 2 separate transactions.

This is why I never use my debit card, I prefer to use my credit card, keeps my day to day spending separate from my bank account with all the s/o's etc for bills ( don't like d/d's either, but thats another story!) & just settle it when the bill comes in. Simples.

It is not the bank's fault, it is the company who processed the transaction. The bank do not know if the transaction is being processed or not, a ""hold" on the funds is standard practice to prevent your account going overdrawn eg you might draw funds out of a cash machine and then the debit card payment will take you overdrawn.

If you can obtain proof from the company they have made a mistake e.g. Receipt showing cancelled then the bank can remove the authority for you without a problem.

Yes pinkdalek is correct, my friend who also banks with Halifax ordered an item online using her debit card, and the company put a hold on the amount aswell as actually taking the amount out of her account. Halifax asked her to get the company to confirm they weren't going to take any further money, which they did by fax directly to Halifax, and Halifax removed the authorisation from the held funds. It took a few phone calls but they sorted it out.
Debt free and staying that way!

If this means that your account is in credit but your available balance is in debit, there won't be any charges because you are not actually overdrawn at the moment (although of course the earmarking may prevent you using the credit balance on the account until it drops off).

Potentially the bank could bounce direct debits and/or standing orders that would otherwise have been paid from the credit funds because funds are earmarked - this is what would most concern me in your position.
