Where to buy meat

I would go with online suppliers, farm shop or a local quality butcher as others have said - plus it's nice to have meat that doesn't shrink as it releases all the added water like you get at the supermarkets!

You will also get cheaper cuts from a butcher and chicken breasts that don't have the bottom half trimmed off so the supermarket can sell em as goujons for extra.
There was a thread here somewhere fairly recently on online suppliers for meat, not sure if it was this board though, will try and look and edit this post later if I find it.
Here it is:

Hi Penny,Hi - Do you have any links to any online ones please.
You will be more likely to find farm shops and online butchers closer to you by doing an internet search, but my local butchers (Wilsons of Crossgates) deliver nationwide and the quality is very good.
The farm shop I use at the moment haven't yet set up their online shop, but there is going to be one at some point. If you search for 'Lane End Farm Shop Tong', you could always bookmark the site and check occasionally. It would be worth it as the quality is exceptional. It is really the best of both worlds at this one, because Martin (the farmer) also trained as a butcher under his father, so really knows his stuff. Their prices are very reasonable too.
Another farm that sells direct which I can vouch for quality is Sunnyside Farm near Dumfries. They are a smallholding that specialise in free range rare breeds (Dexter beef and Gloucester Old Spot pork) so the prices will be around what you would pay for 'organic' meat at the supermarket, maybe slightly cheaper. They do not list much in their online shop, but you can email Dominic with what you want and he will price it up for you. I bought most of my meat from Sunnyside until I discovered Lane End, however I still make the occasional order. Their products are also sold in the food hall at Gretna Green, so I usually stop off there to get something when I am traveling back from trips across the border.0 -
Thanks everyone some great suggestions here.0

We buy pretty much all of our meat from Costco now, the pork loin joints are a particular favourite :beer:0 -
I can recommend Devon Rose online ordering. I can't post the link as I'm new to the forum.
I buy a regular box and the meat is always very good. They do a cheap box which was good but a bit fatty for me as I prefer the lean cuts.0 -
I get almost all our meat from the co-op as they reduce it down and still have the 'buy two for X£' offers working which takes it down even more. They are ok quality- elmwood with some farm assurances, and they also have fish on similar deals.0

Another vote for Costco here - not always the absolute cheapest but the quality is consistently good. You do have do portion up and freeze though, unless you're feeding an entire army.
I also like Morrisons for meat, they have better variety than the other big supermarket chains and are usually slightly cheaper
The 3 for £10 deals at Sainsburys and Tescos can be quite good value
Sainsburys have a very good offer on pork shoulders at the moment - less than £3 per kilo and they're very nice too.
and Farmfoods do very well priced frozen meat, including chicken thighs and pork steaks
Oh and not forgetting the smaller chains (e.g. CoOp and Budgens) can be very generous with their short-date reductions, so it's worth checking them out in the last hour or so of opening if you have anything local.0 -

20kg chicken breasts is £115.41 which is equivalent to £5.77/kg ....... if you look at Tesco even their cheapest chicken breasts (tesco value) are £7.40/kg and Asda is £7.37/kg
FAB!

Have just recently discovered our relatively local poultry factory (in Ballymena, N Ireland) has a factory shop. I bought 3 whole med to large chickens at £1 each and 1.6 kg of chicken fillets for £5 (comes in 4 x 400g trays). All products are well within 'use buy' dates and packaged to be sold in retail outlets, according to the labels I saved £27. You could try any local poultry/meat factories to see if they have a factory shop.0
