Getting out of BT broadband contract

Whilst trying to get my MAC code from BT, i was told my broadband contract doesnt end until end of Jan 2012.. Apparently it was renewed on a rolling contract on the 29 Jan this year, which is the day my son died, having been in intensive care for the whole of Jan, I explained I was pretty much unaware of anything in Jan inc a rolling contract but Bt are having none of it and I was wandering if any one had any ideas ad it will cost over £130 to leave BT.....

Unless the contract you originally signed said that upon the end of the first 12 month contract another 12 month contract would be automatically renewed unless 31 days notice is given then they are lying to you.
You the buyer has to aknowledge that they are offering you a new contract and agree to it. Get on to the cancellations department and ask to speak to the persons superior/manager and voice your concern that you have recieved no communication of a new contract being proposed on Jan 2011.
Tell them you never verbally or in any form of writing authorised them to renew a contract in Jan 2011 and that you would like to give your 31 days notice of cancelling as because as far as you are aware you just on a rolling monthly contract.
Hope this helps....
PS. Take names of people spoken to and times. Also try to get employee numbers and which department they work in if they won't give you a surname.0 -
I don't know if they've now brought this scheme (scam?) into effect for broadband but it has been around for ages on a call package.
I may have the details wrong having binned BT completely some time ago but the line rental includes free weekend calls. They then offer a no-charge evening calls package which is on a 12 month automaticaly renewing contract. Although this is free I'm pretty sure there is a penalty charge for cancelling it.
It sounds like they may have adopted the same underhand tactic for broadband. If so you will have received some gobbledegook letter in December saying you will be automatically renewed for 12 months unless you tell them otherwise.0 -
I think this is probably the case, so would still be better I think to pay the £130 as am still been charged £45 for phone and broadband.... would take a few months to get even money wise but would be rid of paying ridiculous monthly bills!!:j0

Don't just pay them and give into these outrageous rolling contracts BT impose.
Ask for a copy of your signed contract where it details you agree to enter into an auto-renewing 12-month contract. I bet they can't find it....0 -
I have emailed them... These big companies always have the last word tho, but will try before paying the money!0

Not Always. I fought a hard battle against BT last year after waiting 6 months to be connected to a landline (on a new build development) and got the install fee waived, 3 months free line rental, and a letter of apology (probably the most valued gesture).
Better still, despite being signing up to an 18-month contract, they finally relinquished their hold over this agreement last month (6 months early) allowing me to move to a more trusted provider.
Best of luck, but stay positive!0 -
Don't forget to check for cashback deals on Quidco/TopCashBack before you sign up with a new ISP directly.0

We have been with BT for a few years. Our current contract ends on 16/05/11 and they wrote to us on 07/04/11 explaining that our contract would be renewed automatically if we didn't contact them before 16/05/11. I got a MAC code out of them this morning as we want to go elsewhere, but it was like pulling teeth and took me a good 10 minutes..
Op
if you are happy with the service, but want it cheaper, they will offer you retention deals to get you to stay. I was offered £160 a year less.0 -
Hi Hooley,
I am so sorry to hear about the passing of your son. I would like to take a look at the details of your account. Please could you send me in your BT details using the link found in my profile?
Thanks
