HI, In November 2009 we took out a contract phone with O2, 18 months contract. In April (2011) Hubby rang O2 to see about cancelling the contractm which was up in May, as we had taken out a new contract and no longer required the 1st one.
So, O2 said no problem, pay final bill etc etc and that will be that, they also sent us a new sim card so we could keep the number but change it to pay as you go.
Yyesterday a bill arrived from O2 for this contract!
Hubby rang them and they insist it's the final months payment of the contract, but it's been on PAYG for a month, which they knew, AND it was stated on the phone that once he'd paid the bill (on the 11th April) that would be the end of the deal/contract.
O2 insist he was told he'd have to pay, he insists he wasn't told as he said " why would I then go and cancel it, go onto PAYG, effectively paying twice for the phone, if I still had another months charges?"
I hope this makes sense, Just want to know where we stand, if anywhere.
Hubby says he will pay it, what choice does he have if he doesn't want his credit rate affected, but it's bloody annoying!
I told him to speak to someone in authority, but he gets frustrated easily on the phone if it seems he isn't being listened to!

If the contract was was "up in May", you have to pay the for all the remaining time regardless of cancelling earlier and switching to PAYG.0 -
Reads as in April you had old contract plus a new contract .two contracts one expiring in May .
The contract can be cancelled but has to be paid in full as been said .
The PAYG has nothing to do with the contract and does not replace payments due on the contract .Pay off contract on that phone and instead use PAYG PAYG does not take over the payments for the contract .

Thanks both, to simply (!), yes the original contract was due to expire in MAy, but in April Hubby rang them and said " yes its not due to end til may but can i cancel it now?, i;e a month early?"
They said yes, just pay aprils bill, which we did, and that will be the end of it, no mention at all of having to pay any charges or mays bill....
They even said, now the contact has ended we will send you a new sim card so you can keep the number but go onto PAYG...
Ayway, the upshot is we feel they havent been totally fair but we have to pay so there we are0 -

understand your view, the customer service agent has misled you.
Anyone can cancel a contract early. BUT you have to pay off the remaining however many months remaining line rental. If you cancel in April you will have to pay May's line rental in order to do so.
Not being rude but that rule is fairly well known by most peeps. Anyone can cancel their contract early as long as they pay the remaining months line rental. But it's not worth it, as you may as well use the service that you pay for.
Hope this helps clear up any confusion. I think the customer service person just didn't explain to you clearly that you would still have a bill for May's line rental.0
