I haven't logged into my WoW account since late Jan/early Feb. Firstly due to funding, then lack of interest (was busy with other stuff) and then the laptop died! I was getting frustrated with it anyway as my laptop is over 3 years old now and can no longer cope with the graphics. Cue: New Laptop Fund Challenge! haha

We have an XBox 360, which hasn't been played since Jan when my OH's brother visited us. My nephew has offered to take it off our hands! hahaha, nice try, but....no. lol. We also have a Wii, but again, not used since......I can't remember, probably Xmas time.

OH also has a self built PC which he uses for his gaming, and we have a server, and he has another laptop too. I'm surrounded by electronics! What happens if they become self aware????? hahaha

We haven't got a kinect yet, and I do want that as the dance game looks fab! But, seems such a waste of money when I've just realised (from typing this post) that we already have 2 games consoles which we barely use.

Absolutely but when the MMORG's are more often to blame when people do lose perspective and cross that line into actual addiction.

We've got all 3 main consoles and I especially love Kinect but all things in moderation.

Ironically I met my partner of 3 years now through playing Gears of War lol.

Absolutely - as you say, all things in moderation.

There are definitely people who take things like WoW too far. To a point, I can even understand as I believe that the rewards offered in the game world fill a hole that some people may feel is missing from their own life. My main character in WoW has some of the rarer rewards like certain titles or mounts that the majority of players don't have but at the same time there's rewards in-game that I will never obtain simply because I don't have the inclination, or even patience, to spend more than a few hours at a time playing. The rewards I do have are little more than a result of luck and timing with no real focused effort.

I think for people to get addicted to WoW they feel that there is something missing from their own life - perhaps something as simple as recognition. In game your accomplishments can be displayed above your head, like the "Bane of the Fallen King" title and perhaps that little sense of pride some people get might make up for the lack of pride or sense of accomplishment they feel in other areas of their life. It is, of course, a false achievement and the pride is misplaced but then feeling as if you're "important" in this game world could be the cause of some people being unable to function properly without constantly being apart of that world - in much the same way that people in "games" like Second Life have been shown to behave at times.

For me, and I do believe for the vast majority, any game that becomes a full time job, which is the way some people seem to treat WoW, just isn't worth it. I don't have the most meaningful job in the world but I am largely content and therefore the false plaudits I may receive in a game are meaningless to me. I'd give it all up in a second if my partner ever asked me too.

As I say, there are times when I do play for several hours more than I would normally play. I remember rocking through about 70% of one game one night because I became so immersed in it but then once I'd finished it I don't think I played another game for about a week afterwards. For me, at least, I'd say it all evens out. :)

Kinect's not a games console it's witchcraft lol.

It's freaky how good it is and damned hard work on the fitness games. First thing Your Shape Fitness Evolved does is scan your whole body and take loads of measurements and scrolls some of them up the screen too, I felt somewhat violated hahaha

Ohh, I'm not sure I'd like that! It's bad enough that the Wii Fit likes to patronise me for not using it regularly. I'm not sure I want a machine that has the capability to scan me too. It might say 'you've gained an inch on your @rse! Who ate all the pies, then? You did!' Lol

I could come and cat burgle you?

Nah, no good, the insurance would replace it...

Can you force the ring of fire to come up, I wonder? Sabotage would appear to be a harmless computer fault...

Nah, would only buy you some extra time until it got fixed or he bought a new one.

We could rig up something that would give him an electric shock when you need his attention, and every minute thereafter until he gave his undivided attention to you?

I think that may well be the answer :T
Oh but he has already experienced the ROD, on his old xbox, he now has a nice shiny black thing that he says won't suffer it. The most I can hope is it flies out of a bedroom window in a fit of rage.

But the electric shock thing sounds wonderful. If he doesn't reply to me within 15 minutes he gets buzzed.
I'm sure at some time in the future your OH will suffer the red ring of death  "We've" suffered this 3 times and its amazing how important it is a fix or replacement is sought! - the washing machine is on its last legs, the stairs have no carpet on them yet he has the latest Xbox and 50 meg connection :o I'm not really in a position to say much as its his house and I have my own, so when he really gets on my nerves I just go home :D
To be fair, he won't play when I am around because he gets mad at the television and doesn't want me to sit there giggling at him. Because he knows I will laugh....and laugh....and laugh....

Well it won't suffer the Red Ring of Death, but never fear... Microsoft were kind enough to replace the RROD with the Red Dot of Death! :D

The "General Hardware Failure" is now indicated by the Power On dot on the new S model Xbox turning red.
  • I have a beastly PC with a couple of large monitors... well I needed it for work, really I did! It also happens to be good for things like WoW and lotro. My vice is pc based MMOs. I guess I spend about 20-25 hours a week playing them, but I have a good social network on them and I don't watch tv from one week to the next. I don't have an OH to frown that I don't spend enough time with them either.

I gave up my MMO Vice in February, university work needed to take precendent and I was more interested in slaying robots and fiends on City of Heroes. The OH still plays it, though not as much since he's met me ^^

Oooooo yay all is not lost! I better tell my mother that actually, the children have been playing their xbox for about 15 hours a day over the easter holidays. I know the holidays have now finished but bring on the summer holidays
