Strangely I still get it cheaper than if I were to use Paypal's currency conversion. Although not often much (10p - £1) I'm surprised I get charged at all, so either HSBC gives an extremely good exchange rate with charges or Paypal gives a horrible exchange rate.
Theres not much in it.
Today Paypal is slightly better
Today PayPal would give $1.59819 to the £ and
HSBC would give £1.59255 to the £
PayPal exchange rates can be found once you log into their site.
HSBC use the Visa rate with a 2.75% extra charge which can be found here http://corporate.visa.com/pd/consumer_services/consumer_ex_rates.jsp?src=ex_rez0
