    Hmm, thanks Joe-Jam. :)

Is this the same for ALL banks?

Different banks have different charges, some do some dont. But in your case you are being charged because the payment is either being processed outside the UK, or in anouther currency.

Its the same if you juse the ATM abroad the 1.50 will be there also, along with other charges.

You could try getting a prepaid card for using on the internet The o2 money card is free for example, you just top it up with your visa electron.

the charge is 2.75% for a foreign transaction which is cheaper than your halifax card.
  • Norwich and Peterborough and Metro Bank free no fee
HSBC 2.75% i believe nationwide also has this fee only also

I purchase on my HSBC Visa card regularly in US dollars and I'm never charged any percentage. In fact I often get a better exchange rate from HSBC than Paypal.

That doesn't tally with HSBC's own debit card fees & charges info HERE

Which suggests that Paypal may have a higher ERA than HSBC's 2.75%.

You are being charged by HSBC - you just don't know it because it's buried in the exchange rate and not listed separately

Strangely I still get it cheaper than if I were to use Paypal's currency conversion. Although not often much (10p - £1) I'm surprised I get charged at all, so either HSBC gives an extremely good exchange rate with charges or Paypal gives a horrible exchange rate.
