Should the airline pay for accommodation?

I have booked a flight with Expedia from Rhodes to Venice. The flight has shown up as two flights with different airlines and has a 12 hour overnight stopover in Athens. As I booked the flight as a single journey, I'm trying to find out if anyone (either Expedia, or one of the airlines) is required to put me up in a hotel.

I've tried e-mailing atol, and they couldn't help or give me an answer. Expedia have just said that the airline don't need to put me in a hotel.

Has anyone gone through a similar situation or does anyone know what my rights are, concerning this matter?

Any help would be much appreciated :)

Whilst you booked the flight in one booking, it should have shown you the flight routings and timings, which you accepted. The airline is not liable for overnight hotel, as then everyone would be booking that type of routing to get free hotels !

You could see if they (Expedia) could change the flights, but I think you may be unlucky if the flights are non changeable.

I've flown similar long haul itineraries that require overnight stopovers.

You have absolutely no chance of the airline(s) or travel agent providing accomodation. None whatsoever

Not a chance - you should have checked your routing when you booked.

The clue would have been in the long time between departure and arrival......

I'm guessing you went with the routing as it was the cheapest? That tends to be the case with long layovers...agree with the others, you have no claim for accomodation - you booked the flights as offered, without any promise of accomodation.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

Expedia shows pretty clearly the airlines/flight numbers and where the flight connects (there do not appear to be any direct flights)

you must have noticed this when you booked

you will need to pay for your own accommodation or sleep in the airport

You might want to read rule 4.3:

Security and the cleaners enforce it!

Reports seem to be mixed on Athens.

Note that I have never slept in an airport myself...but someone posted this site once and I thought it was interesting that it existed. :)

Athens is a nice airport, but the security people are very strict about sleeping there.
