Thought I would post an update a year later! We ended up renting a house in South Wonston a few miles north of Winchester. We are finally in a position to buy having sold our house in Bristol and have just had an offer accepted on a cottage in the beautiful village of Longparish a few miles from Whitchurch. I do travel to london for work once or twice a month so the train station at Whitchurch will be handy. I have to say that the worries I had about the rush hour traffic a year ago have proved unfounded. I have never lived anywhere with such amazing roads as Hampshire and the rush hour is about as busy as midnight on a Sunday night in school holidays in Paris! Overall the move, job etc have gone very well and we love Hampshire. I've taken up road cycling and there is nothing better than riding 50 miles through the quiet Hampshire country lanes on a Sunday morning. We can't wait to move into our 400 year old thatched cottage!

Funny stumbling across this thread. We moved to Longparish in October and it has far surpassed our expectations. We are in our forever home (spacious 400 year old thatched cottage) in a wonderful village with a lovely community spirit and great primary school, with the excellent secondary school in Whitchurch up the road. Great part of the world and so happy we made the move. My kids are thriving here, swamped with friends, fun and spacious countryside.
