I recommend Fleet too, great area for kids most schools outstanding ofsted. There are rural bits and can get a nice 4 bed detached with big garden for 400K, Hook would be good too and Hartley Wintney.
  • The schools in Fleet are fantastic. There are about 5 infant and primary schools and the 2 Secondary schools both have outstanding Ofsted reports. If you are after a private school then we have St Nicks (Girls) Yateley Manor (Mixed) or The Grey House School (Mixed).

In the past I have lived in Tadley (a town 5 or 6 miles north of Basingstoke) and it sounds as though it would meet a lot of your needs.

Tadley doesn't have a train station so your money goes a lot further here then it would in comparable towns with a station. In terms of countryside you have Tadley Common and Pamber Forest within a short walk of the town.

Blimey I'm confused now, but thanks for all these many options! I visited Basingstoke for the interviews and being honest, I did not really like the look of the place but I only saw the centre and the drive in from the north. There do seem to be many good options around though like Chineham, Pamber, Fleet, Whitchurch etc. Anyone know just how long it would actually take to commute from Whitchurch into Basingstoke by car (next to the train station)? We currently temporarily live in Paris and are relocating from here (we lived in South Glos before that and are currently selling our house there) so will have literally one or two days maximum to look at areas so we need to be very focused. Also after years of commuting by train in London previously and Paris for the last 3.5 years I am absolutely and violently SICK of trains so wherever we live I am commuting by car. I saw a recommendation for Perrins school - that's actually in Alresford, the place I was first thinking of in the first place, rather than Alton. My only concern with Alresford is how long the commute might be - like Whitchurch it looks like its a 30 minute drive on Google maps on a B road but how that pans out in the reality of rush hour is completely unknown to me. Driving 45 minutes each way would be fine for me but any more is too much - currently I work 9am to 8pm most days and have 1h 15m on the train either side of that so I'm used to long commutes and very long days (and seeing my kids only at weekends :() but would like to improve on that. So from all these responses I think I will look at: Fleet, Whitchurch, Chineham, Old Basing, Alresford and Kings Worthy. Wow, that will be a busy few days especially if we want to see schools too! Someone mentioned private schools - not for us, state schools only as we are not rich enough. Probably wouldn't use private schools even if we were rich enough anyway.

Whitchurch to Basingstoke is approx. 15 minutes.

Its a beautiful village with a Tesco express, Somerfield, buchers, bakers, greengrocers, flower shop, shoe shop, handbag shop a few gift shops, library, Silk Mill, 2 cafes and a garage. Not to mention several pubs.

I am told both the Primary and Secondary schools are good.

On the downside property to buy and rental is few and far between, not to mention expensive!

    Hope this helps

Many thanks. Sounds like the kind of place we are looking for and we will definitely take a look. Ideally I would like to spend no more than £350k on a house but £400k at a push and it looks like there would be a few, but really only a few, options in Whitchurch!

    Hi

I live in Whitchurch and it is a great place to live, Basingstoke, Winchester and Newbury are all withing 20 Minutes and there are direct trains to London in under an hour.

There are plenty of walks, pubs, clubs and activites in the area and pulic transport is good if you need it. Use rightmove and globrix to find properties for sale, as there is only one estate agent in the town and the others that people use don't always use rightmove. Good luck on you hunt and if you have any other questions feel free to ask.

My friend lives in Odiham, which is a really nice (posh) village on the outskirts of Basingstoke.

The Alton road is a nightmare during rush hour. Especially if their is an accident.

Challoner is a catholic school but has to take pupils from all denominations.

Odiham is lovely, good shout! Old Basing/Sherbourne/Bramley very charming,
