Out of curiosity how did they compromise your card to the extent the bank decided to cancel it?

:D

As we know, if Wonga are unable to get back all their money in one shot they attempt to take random, smaller, amounts from the card.

Presumably this triggered a fraud warning at the bank?

TBH I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often.

Also on their site it clearly states
We hope it never comes to this, but if you still feel unhappy after discussing the matter with us, you can make a formal complaint in writing to customercare@wonga.com. We will normally respond to your complaint – and endeavour to resolve it - within 48 working hours. If your complaint is particularly complex, however, it may take longer to investigate. In these cases, we will always explain why there is a delay and tell you when we will contact you again. If you are not satisfied with our response you can appeal the decision by writing to us again, stating your objections and providing any new information to be considered.

Yet I have emailed them more than 6 times, twice alone on the 29th and they have made no attempt to resolve this issue or discuss anything with me. I have not received a reply to my issues.

To be fair - it hasn't actually been 48 working hours since the morning of 29th April. Hopefully they'll contact you soon, although I would think in common with many other businesses accommodating the short weeks this might be one of those times when they struggle to meet their 'normal' response target.

I asked the exact same question, the response I got was that it was due to repeated activity attempted by WONGA, they wouldnt go more specific than that.

Trouble is, I was sent a text and email by WONGA in the morning on my due date (about 11:30am) stating I had incurred a 20 pound late fee.

And despite them getting paid the full amount on the 29th, they still seem reluctant to reply to emails, having used both the online form and the direct complaints email address.

You would expect them atleast to argue the fact that they had anything to do with the reasons my card got blocked and a new one issued. But not heard a peep out of them!

I do understand this Tixy and can appreciate it. Although stupidly the threatening texts and emails on friday, all weekend, yesterday and today, all stated I was being charged extra fees and if I had a problem to contact them... So it should be a two way street. Their phone lines are not 24/7, they dont operate at all on weekends, and I doubt they did on friday or monday due to the bank holidays. Yet they dont mind telling people to call them to sort out problems and threatening them? Its rather frustrating.

And I know wonga will just blame their automated service, but its not really a good enough excuse. Good news is my friend has had a call back from her bank since cancelling the card this morning and talking to them, the bank are refunding the money and will be persuing WONGA with intent to take action against them taking money without consent

Apples2 you really shouldnt be commenting. Ring their payment line and it says very clearly "to make a one off payment with a card not associated with your account press..." which she did, so yes for them to keep her card details and continue to bill her card, is fraud. Especially as she entered into no agreement with them at all except for keying in ONE SPECIFIC amount of money ONCE and the moment they take more than that amount, they are commiting theft.
And its my own doing because WONGA caused my card to be cancelled by my bank by compromising it?? How do you figure that one out? Seriously dont comment if you are unable to comprehend.

I would argue 'tis you who cannot comprehend what is happening.

I'm guessing here but I can assume Wonga attempted the withdrawal on the day you told them to try.
The attempt failed, so they tried again, and again.
The bank saw the pattern of repeated attempts to withdraw from your account so placed a block on the card (I reiterate I am guessing, maybe there is something more sinister). {EDIT} Missed the last bunch of replies below Clives.

I have seen repeated Terms and Condiitions on PDL companies stating that attempts to withdraw money will be conducted from ANY card they have on your file (whether that is right or wrong is another argument).

I would aslo suggest you have no understanding of the type of company you are dealing with, pretty websites do not mean an honest, sympathetic friend, this is business.

This type of loan should be an absolute last resort, you will not find a single post recommending their use, I am normally one of the first to advise against it.

The bottom line is that you caused all this mess by not ensuring you had the money in the very account you told them to take from, on the day you told them to take it.

again proving you cannot read. I have stated several times I had more than enough in the account ON THE DAY, as well as BEFORE the day and still right now. I had the money in the account, I have the statements to prove it, so seriously go and troll somewhere else.

Can I ask if you've actually called them about this yet?

She won't as the call will cost money.

Still intrigued as to why the request for payment failed.

I hope the bank do take action against Wonga, they are money grabbing b*****ds, you had the money in your account on the day it was due, yet they insist you owe them more. They compromise your card by trying to take as much as you can, then STEAL money from someone elses account after the money you owed was paid in full and ON TIME. I truly hope the bank get as much compensation off them as they possibly can and then maybe they will conduct their business in the manner they are supposed to.

Maybe the original transaction was declined by the bank as a fraudulent transaction as it was a transaction which was not consistent with the OP's normal spending habit / previous transactions?
