Best Value camera on the market for £150-£200 for a guy

Hi all,

I am looking to get the best camera for a guy for £150-200.

It has to take good pictures, but I don't really care about video.

I'd be more concerned about rubbish pictures when the target is moving, or if the light is different - bright and sunny to dark.

I don't mind an SLR, but I am pretty rubbish when it comes to understanding digital cameras and so I doubt I'd be able to know what settings to change, but that may change once I own my own camera.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Just out of interest, why does the camera have to be for a guy, and not for a non-male person? Are you saying that it shouldn't be a pink camera?

Anything in the Panasonic Lumix range would be a good purchase.
But I have to say a couple of things.....
When the subject is moving compact cameras can sometimes struggle - particularly in anything but bright light.
Every camera will struggle with very bright and very dark areas next to each other. The way to fix it is to know about exposures and bracketing.....possible on a compact but not as good as an SLR.
You say you don't mind an SLR - but mention a budget of £150-200. You'll only get a bottom of the range SLR which isn't necessarily bad since they're all good but the real limiter is the lenses you have at that budget. You might be lucky and have one lens but it won't give you a great focal range so you'll be limited in your lens, even if the camera is more flexible.

When carting an SLR around isn't an option, I use one of two "bridge" cameras; the Fuji Finepix S6500FD or a Casio Exilim FH20.

These give zoom equivalents of about 30-500mm (old 35mm equivalent) with pretty good performance across the range. They also give manual and automatic focussing and exposure; features you don't generally get in compacts.

The Fuji performs slightly better in dark conditions (I do a bit of gig photography), but the Casio is unbeatable for action shots - it can take up to 40 frames per second - I don't think any SLRs are capable of that.

I paid around the £200 mark for each.

Both models have been superceded but, if their successors are anything like as good, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.
I'm dreaming of a white Christmas.
But, if the white runs out, I'll drink the red.

Oh no, nothing like that! :)

It's just that I've heard many conversations where people talk about if the camera is for a girl, they'd want one light and portable and so SLRs are out of the question etc. I just wanted to state that that did not really apply in a roundabout sort of way! :)

For £150-200, you MAY get a DSLR second hand on ebay. That would deffinately fit the bill. But my guess it will be very old and/or almost broken, sorry

I agree with what has been said, and the shots of moving/light and dark etc. That will be something more down to the user to get the best from those shots, but that is a good thnig i think

Anyhow, I sold my DSLR a while ago for various reasons, but a couple of weeks ago I bought a

I must admit that I was blown away by the camera and the quality of the pictures that came from it. Yes I will have to adjust my shot taking skills from the DSLR to this, but apart from that I am VERY happy. This one gets my vote

My 2 cents, for that price range i find this camera pretty damn good Canon IXUS 220 HS.

Im not a camera person but seems pretty decent to me.

Just my 2d worth, the vast majority of compact digicams have small sensors 1/2.7" inside, whereas DSLRs have bigger 1.8" and hence better sensors.

A very few compacts have larger 2/3" sensors, choosing one of these would seem to fit the bill. However this information is hard to come by, you can start your search here and there
