Petrol prices

This has probably come up half a dozen times before, but does anyone know what happens to the odd amount created by the fact that fuel costs are never in exact pennies i.e. 141.9p/litre. I've done some sums and in fact unless you fill up by cost, £15.00 of fuel say, the petrol company always make a little extra from rounding up to the nearest penny. If you fill by the litre you will nearly always end up with an amount of money owed, that isn't exact. Is this true or am I missing something?

Yes you are missing something you buy fuel by cash amount not volume. You can't actually buy a litre - you get the amount you end up paying for.

Even if your logic was correct - it wouldn't be the the "petrol company" making the extra money - it would be the garage - usually Tesco, Asda,
    Sainsbury's, etc, etc..............

Minimum spend is usually £5 so you can't actually buy just one litre.

They are all added together and at the end of the year they are used to pay for the champagne at the shareholders meeting.

You've got to have some bubbly for the shareholders.:)

Come to where I work, you can put a penny in your tank if you want to!! (thats assuming you can actually hit it dead on the penny mind)

Says who? I bought 900ml once. Haha! (filled it up into a water bottle for my little brothers mini motor adventure.) The guy at the desk did stare at me oddly though. :D

Pumps at work say a minimum of 2 litres, but nothing stopping you from filling less.

Pumps generally give out more than what it says anyway, had to do a pump test at work a couple of days ago, and the pump said it was 20 litres, but the tank we filled up said it was 20.2 litres. Think thats how they get around the .9p
What is pi? Where did it come from?
