... there isn't a way to transfer apps onto an SD card (that I know of)...
Don't know about your phone, but this can be easily done on modern androids.

Menu >> Applications >> Manage Applications

Also, there are special apps that can do this job for you.

I have the Galaxy S and yes the battery does need charging a lot if you use it but you can buy an extended life battery from Ebay for about £10-£15 and it really does give you a lot longer.
    Great phone though.
I can't move apps to SD card either on mine but apparantly thats because I am on old software, if you upgrade to the newer sotware using Samsung Kies you can then save apps to both the internal and external SD cards apparantly.

Thank you. I did try a couple of apps from the Marketplace but they didn't work well or I couldn't get on with them well. I'll keep looking for one that works. It was one of the main criticisms I read on different forums regarding this model though. :)

It's the Samsung Galaxy Portal (i5700).

I'm talking about apps that give you direct access rather than going through the web browser and login process. For instance, the Royal Bank of Scotland app is iPhone only, as is the First Direct app.

Are you saying that you don't have to log in to the accounts?
I find the apps are just often a link to the mobile version of the websites.

This is a subject close to my heart. As a self confessed geek, I really want to like Android. I want a phone I can customise the way I want to work rather than be forced to work the Apple way.

The problem is my experience of Android phones so far is that whilst on paper they tick all the right boxes, put everything together and I've yet to see one which comes close to the full Apple "experience".

What do I mean by this? Well firstly Android is being developed at such a speed that if you have an older phone (and by that I mean by a few months) then chances are you won't be on the latest version. Depending on the phone you may be able to root it and download your own custom ROM but seriously, how many of your average phone users will do that?

There's no desktop application which makes setting the phone up a pain. Try importing your music and setting up playlists on a 4" screen! Drove me potty!

Plus with such a fast speed of development and a light touch on their app store means programs often have bugs. The other week my GF upgraded her Facebook to v1.53 and the stupid thing force closed on virtually anything. Looking around we were far from the only ones having that problem. I've found many many other bugs where stuff just doesn't work or I have to delete/recreate to get it to work. Having so many different handsets & versions makes it impossible for people to test everything. Contrast that with Apple where your iphone is the same as everyone elses. You test one, you've tested them all.

Hardware-wise you gotta love Android. I mean dual core phones, SD slots, removable batteries. So much choice! But I've yet to find a phone as rounded and as sleek as the iphone. The Desire HD came close until my mate who is an android head warned me off as his battery life is shocking. That said, I am drooling over the Samsung Galaxy S II but will wait and see before handing over my iphone.

The thing with the iphone is it just works. No mess, no fuss. Sure its a bit ubiquitous now & everyone has one but that's because it's simple, it works and it looks gorgeous.

Have you seen the Xperia Arc, especially in silver? And I mean a real one not the dummies they put on display in shops.

They're proper apps not just links to the site.

Well, I think often they are just links to special websites designed for touchscreen phones.

Personally, I never wanted to use my phone for online banking, so my example is from another area: https://touch.betfair.com

Stick to what you know. Why learn something new?

The 2 OS are both good in there own ways. I have iphone 4 its great, wife has galaxy s on android, its also great.

Both have apps that are coming soon and features missing.

Skype on iphone workes great, video calling to other phones and pc. The android version doesnt do video calls and even though skype are working on it, it seems to be a long way off still. The excuse is that iphone has one platform so make it work once and it works. For android there are various screen sizes/resolutions and so on so its not as easy.

I had assumed that as android is supposedly so much easier/better that it must work.

My view woudl be stick to what you know and upgrade to the newer version, the 3g is quite old now and tech has moved on quickly. the 3gs woudl be an improvement and the iphone 4 a further step
