Well, my final bill has arrived and there is a cancellation charge. I'll give their online billing complaints team a chance to resolve it before emailing Mr Buckley.

I have now received an amended final bill from BT showing a refund of the cancellation charge (as engineering compensation!).

Just have to check the bank statement and make sure the refund actually appears.

If you mean Virgin Media (cable service), then you can't. VM is the only cable provider-to switch to BT, (or any other provider) you'll need a BT line installing.

NTL was taken over by Virgin some time ago.

It depends on your needs. Virgin cable broadband is always going to be faster than ADSL broadband but Virgin has the UK's most expensive voice telephony call charges.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
