I think I might want to report someone

But I'm not sure what would be worse for the poor dog, staying where it is or possibly being taken in by the SSPCA and being in a kennel if the worst came to the worst..

Dog looks fairly old, no idea what type, medium size cross breed of some sort.

It's kept in a back garden, I think 24/7 (son says it has an open shed type shelter and isn't allowed in the house but I don't know if that's an actual fact). It cries for hours every day. I've never seen it being taken for a walk or given any attention. I'm assuming it gets fed as it's a chubby wee thing. The garden is small and is little more than a junk yard, it's unkempt with rubble and junk everywhere. There's no space for it to move around much.

The dog is clearly lonely and unhappy, it's left to it's own devices a lot (maybe all the time).

So what's worse, the life it has now or the possibility of being taken into an SSPCA kennel where it may become stressed and even more unhappy?

I'm really not sure what to do but seeing the dog like this and hearing it cry every day is hard.

Approaching the owner is not an option for reasons I'm not going into.

Thoughts please?

  • I'd say def report it - your details will be kept confidential. A home visit from the SSPCA may well "encourage" the owner to buck their ideas up and tidy the garden etc. The inspectors will be able to get a good look at the condition of the dog, it's shelter etc and make sure adequate care is being provided.

If it isn't being properly cared for, then it's much better off being in a shelter where it will hopefully find a loving new home.

Poor wee soul, fingers crossed it gets some TLC soon.

That's so upsetting. I really don't understand why people own dogs if they're going to treat them so badly. Poor little dog sounds very distressed and is probably lonely. Dogs are pack animals and enjoy & need company. Our neighbours have 2 dogs that howl & cry when their owners go out & it's very upsetting. I really don't have too much faith in the RSPCA. If the dog has shelter, food & water, I really don't think they would take any action. I'd ring The Dogs Trust to see if they could offer any help and advice. Really think he'd be a lot happier in a kennel where he's going to get some proper attention. The Dogs Trust take very good care of the in their care. Try and get some help for the poor little thing. Thank goodness someone cares about his welfare.
  • You should report it, I understand your concerns completely but as rising from the ashes said a visit could well be the kick up the rear that the owners need to sort out the garden and other issues. Its scary how many people don't realise how badly they are treating an animal until someone points it out to them.

If you do report it - please keep in mind dog may be taken away, put in a kennel and eventually put down.
Not sure really what would I do, so many dogs are put down by RSPCA each yer as there is not enough homes for them.

    That's why I'm hesitant. :undecided

I think I'll phone tomorrow and mention my concerns both about the dog and the kennel bit.

Francesanne, the nearest Dog's Trust is 200 miles away so it's the SSPCA or nothing I'm afraid.

The RSPCA may put dogs down but the SSPCA (like Dogs Trust) do not put healthy dogs down.

I know it sounds harsh but as the dog has no life now,it would probably be better off dead.

PLEASE report it,I hate to hear of neglected dogs like this.It is cruel and unneccessary. The owners probably would welcome the chance to have it taken away, they are just too selfish and uncaring to actually go to any bother or expense to arrange it themselves.

It makes me SO angry amd sadly it happens WAY too often.

Perhaps a visit would prompt some action by the owners to improve its care or a decision that they don't really want the dog & happy for it to be taken away. I don't see why going into a rescue would be worse than its current living conditions, it would have a chance of a better life & even PTS is better than spending the rest of its life being neglected.

Report it.I did the same some years ago when working for VM,Called at a house to disconnect the equipment for non-payment & every window in the house was shattered.According to the neighbor, they owners were alchies & had gone away on the lash.Looking out from a shattered upstairs window was a dog,it's throat inches from jagged glass.
So I called the USPCA who told me they were too busy & report it to the PSNI!! So I did!!!
