exactly! there are some very defeatist people here!

I bet their "sciatica" would miraculously resolve if they were told by their quacks to swap their prized motors for one of these monstrosities...

Out of curiosity, what engine was in those revolting things, who made them, and what is the history to them?

I do think that it is down to the individual as we all experience our pain differently but for me I have a Seat Altea and I find it one of the most comfortable places to be. I have a prolapsed L5-S1 and have found firmer chairs/seats really do help. I couldn't sit on our sofas at all at home as they were cheap soft ones but we have now got some Ekornes Stressless sofas and it has made a huge difference. They aren't cheap but they were worth it for us. We are now thinking of changing our car to a Touran as we could do with being able to get another adult in the back between my two young children who are still in car seats but I am a bit hesitant as my Altea may not be anything special to most people but it is comfy, fairly economical and reliable. Our Altea has 65k on it but if we find we could push to afford a Touran then it will probably be one with aorund 150k on it and I'm thinking maybe after that much use the seat may not be so supportive anymore. Something to think about I suppose.

I do mean more viscous(!).. i.e. more rubbery...

I strongly request you do some research, using a proper A&P textbook rather than wikipedia or google, are you suggesting that in your 30's your intervertebral discs are not getting degenerated and aging, explain your reasoning for stating they get more "viscous" or "rubbery". Your twenties and thirties is when a sizable amount of the damage is caused, poor posture, carrying loads badly, incorrect lifting procedure all have a detrimantal effect on your intervertable discs, that is one of the reasons they are there, amongst others. Die to the fact this aging process is largely painless then no advise is sought, and any oain is normally dealt with with over the counter analgesia or NSAIDs

I must remember to instruct my Consultant how wrong he is next time I see him.

Dry out, maybe, but not degenerate.

What is your experienced and qualified Medical Opinion on "Degenerative Disc Disease" then? As a clue the discs age or degenerate in part by drying out, the term for this is dessication

Yes, the nerve is pressed or "trapped" against a bulging or herniating disc. As the cartilage in the disc thickens with age, it tends to bulge less. This reduces the risk of relapse and the frequency and the severity of the attacks.
"Most disc herniations occur when a person is in their thirties or forties when the nucleus pulposus is still a gelatin-like substance.

"With age the nucleus pulposus changes ("dries out") and the risk of herniation is greatly reduced." -- wikipedia

I think you will find the best place to find out accurate information on anything is perhaps not wikipedia, unless you want to find out what Lady Gaga is currently wearing.

If the sciatic pain is still present, instead of buying a new car, the OP should be demanding better clinical attention.

Has the OP had any form of scan of the spine? Has the OP been given a definite diagnosis of spinal disc herniation?

There are other ailments including osteoporosis, or even spinal tumours, that can present with similar symptoms.

Osteoporosis? I suspect that the OP's GO would have had a look for suchnthings already, though i don't believe the OP is in her 70's or 80's.

Spinal Tumours? For Gods sake can you stick to the subject the OP wishes to discuss.

Dr's have been diagnosing and treating things such as sciatica long before Google and Wikipedia, and as the OP has asked for information on good cars to buy that won't make her Sciatica worse then I think we can assume that her GP has indeed diagnosed her with this condition and that she hasn't self diagnosed after posting on MSE.

Why do you keep on posting about medical things that you obviously know little about, medical information quoted out of context can be very misleading.

If you have information on a car that will be comfortable to transprt the OP then please post away, but the OP has been told that she has Sciatica not a osteoprosis, so lets stick to the question in hand.

The main thing you have missed is that the term Sciatica mainly refers to impingment of the sciatic nerve and it is typified by pain that radiates down the person's leg, a lot have a numbness in one buttock.

There are other conditions that may give the same Signs & Symptoms but they are not sciatica, that is why when you have pain you attend an appointment with your GP and they come up with a diagnosis, not using Google or Wikipedia usually, this may or may not be followed up by some scans such as a CT or MRI.

Now can we stick to the forum rules and leave medical opinion to those in the know.

The OP has Sciatica, and has asked for advise on that basis.

I haven't even touched on Nerve Root Compression which is again a completely different discussion. And has no place on this forum.

So what car did you say was comfy for the OP?

82 mph! I'd be terrified in one of those going more than about 50!
