whilst i dont have sciatica i do have a scoliosis with compressed vertabret middle and lower spine caused by a car accident and accident at work later being the lower part being damaged.

i find a soft leather seat with lumbar support best, and adding a little memory foam wedge now and then when i get pinched nurves to support the backs of my legs

I find the Leather in my ML most comfortable;)

Failing that I find the seats, seating Height and ease of access in my clapped out Berlingo van the most comfortable.

I didn't have sciatica until I owned a Ford Focus. As it turned out it was down to a bad clutch master cylinder (long story), but the fact is that the car doesn't seem to be all that ergonomically designed as far as I can see.

On the other hand the Mitsubishi Space Star seemed to be very good at easing the condition when it was at its worst, so I'd recommend that car.

I'd definately recommend heated seats. I sometimes go out to sit in the car just to get the heat on!

It varies by person - I found the Saab seats terrible (the squab was too long for my (short-ish) thighs. I found BMW great becuase the squab is adjustable (I did have the sports seats though). I found the Mondeo seats OK, Many japanese car seats are less than OK. Others I know say Volvo are good. You need to go out and try a mixture.

I've had 'trapped nerve' problems (5th sacral apparently) on and off for most of my adult life, and when I was driving 50,000 miles a year did find certain cars aggravated it - at that mileage I was changing cars annually so the differences were stark (it was the nineties though so no point in giving car-specific advice).

However - since taking up motorcycling and cycling I've never had so much as a twinge - whether it's the exercise, development of different muscles, weight loss or what I don't know. I can do a long drive in a car now with no problem.

Obviously your condition could be completely different but it does illustrate that getting to the root of the problem and/or doing things differently can be well worth doing.

I suffer the same thing and no car has been better for me than our old, now sold, Mk1 Scenic. High soft seat and soft suspension.

I have three knacked discs in my lumbar which give me pain similar to Sciatica. I have a MK3 Ford Mondeo and can quite happily drive that from East Yorks to Tours in France in one day without any problems. In contrast, my wife has a Mitsubishi FTO and I can't even go across town in that.

Dry out, maybe, but not degenerate.

Maybe get the sciatica sorted, whether through physiotherapy or spinal surgery. Sciatica tends to fade anyway once you reach your 30s, as the fluid in the spinal discs becomes more viscous. You can drive any car then!

Sciatica can be caused by an infitinite number of things and affect people in an equally infinite number of ways.

Sweeping statements such as this are pointless and of little help.

I have chronic back pain thanks to a herniated disc around 10years ago....but what works a treat for me does nothing for my uncle who also has sciatica.

exactly! there are some very defeatist people here!

I bet their "sciatica" would miraculously resolve if they were told by their quacks to swap their prized motors for one of these monstrosities...

Out of curiosity, what engine was in those revolting things, who made them, and what is the history to them?
