BT Yahoo Broadband - What is going on?

Has anyone else suffered the following problem, because at the moment I am absolutely seething!

My BT Yahoo connection has been billed by direct debit for the past 5 years or so, and stood at 29.99 per month. Then the following happens:

16/11 - email from BT Yahoo saying £55 will be debited from my account on 21/11.

24/11 - email from BT Yahoo saying I have been overcharged, the problem has been rectified and the overcharged amount will be refunded. At this stage, NOTHING has been taken from my bank account by BT.

1/12 - email from BT Yahoo saying £55 will be debited from my account on 5/12.

3/12 - another email from BT Yahoo saying £55 will be debited from my account on 5/12.

I then call BT and EVENTUALLY get through to speak to someone who says there has been this problem on many of the BT accounts. I get my call reference number and am given the mail address of BT Broadband billing in Bristol. He assures me everything is OK.

4/12 (today) - I get a letter from BT headed "BT Yahoo! Broadband services - account suspended". Their records apparently show that my subscription has not been received. But as far as I am concerned it has not been touched by me. I move down to the paragraph headed "To avoid cancellation of your service" and call the number given 0845 600 7030, and get the message "This service is not available". I call 0845 600 7020, the business number, get through and demand to speak to someone. I am told they can do nothing as I am a residential customer, but get to speak to someone else who says they will call back within the hour! They now have only 10 minutes left before the hour is up, and I am not very optimistic about being called back.

Has anybody else suffered this problem? What should I do next? Is there a contact number where I can speak to someone in authority? This whole thing stinks and has made me livid - in case you couldn't tell.
